It's a daunting task, especially for new graduates, to find and build experience when almost every company requires you to have said experience before applying in the first place. The question now is how you, a rookie, can get the required experience even though you have never worked before. The truth about job searches is that although having a university degree is great, gaining practical skills is equally important, if not more.

?

It's here the prospects of applying for internship positions come into play.

?

An internship is a job taken by someone within a specified period of time in order to learn a profession or trade. Internships are like volunteer work, and as such there is no pay added to the skill acquisition process, which can be a deterrent for some people because let's face it, nobody wants to work for free.

?

Nevertheless, internships provide valuable work experience and since more hiring managers require internship experience, there might be plenty of paid and unpaid opportunities in a variety of fields, and the experience would give you a boost on other candidates during job interviews.

So, what exactly can you expect from an unpaid job or internship?

?

1. REAL-WORLD EXPERIENCE.

2. PUTTING CLASSROOM THEORIES TO PRACTICE.

Contrary to popular belief, everything learned in the classroom is not a real-world experience. Reasons being that while the classroom has structure, the real world does not as issues can arise on spontaneous basis. Therefore, translating all the theories learned in the classroom into the real world will be the first step that you take to help you land an entry level job in the field you desire to work in.

?

3. NETWORKING.

An excellent way to build your professional network is by establishing new and lasting relationships with people in your field. Once you enter a professional environment, you will have the opportunity to meet and find people who share the same goals and interests as you. So, attending those events hosted by the company you intern at is a perfect chance to meet future colleagues/friends.

?

4. CONFIDENCE BOOSTING.

Entering the real world can always be scary and there is every guarantee that you would fail too. This is where your confidence begins to flourish and eventually take shape. Succeeding in the real world would not only boost your confidence; it would make you perform better in school, give you the willingness to take on more professional challenges and takes you out of your comfort zone.
