"Never mistake her silence for weakness. Remember that sometimes the air stills, before the onset of a hurricane" - Nikita Gill
Last week, I became aware of a short film teaser called "Dysphoria". The name, so chosen because of it's meaning " (n) a state of unease of generational dissatisfaction with life". The film is a teaser for a full length production hoping to be shot from next month, but in need of financial assistance. I wanted to meet with Yennis Cheung as soon as I heard about her project.
A talented actress and screenwriter, she is new to LinkedIn, but in the brief moments we spent together, it was clear she has a wonderfully refreshing ambition for this project and changing an outdated and repressive culture, from which she herself has had to flee.
"From a young age," she says "I saw Chinese actresses raped on screen as part of the story line, and they always fell in love with their captures." In fact, she relates how women in East Asian culture are not allowed to speak out about their mental health, or what might be happening behind closed doors.
Sadly, the evidence has always been there, but perhaps not as widely noted as it should be...
A statistic from a BBC article in 2018 suggested that in cases of attempted suicide amongst women in the UK, the recorded rate of women with South Asian heritage were two and a half times more than those of white women. Trends in data from Statista suggested that China has a relatively high suicide rate for women, but relatively low for men.
Let's give them a voice.
The story of this short film, does have a happy ending and positive message though...
"Nevertheless, this surreal encounter (referencing the plot that Lucia, the character witnesses another women's suicide) allows Lucia to realise that maybe the most effective way to relieve her suffering is to let go of her desire to control the negative intrusions in her brain and hold on to the happy moments, no matter how minute they are. Maybe she can learn to find comfort within herself."
So perhaps with the support of this online community, we can spread the awareness of the silent suffering we have been blind to, and provide the project with the financial contributions it needs to be made.

My goodness! Heartbreaking! Thank you for sharing Odessa..... what a wonderful motivation.

3 年Thank you Odessa for sharing this very important topic. I have learned over the last 18 months how huge this issue is in all continents, and how there is a very silent but massive problem for women and children. It makes me sick to my stomach that this behaviour continues. Spreading awareness is key, but so is the opportunity to help women who have been abused to take back their power and not feel a victim. Stuff happens to us all with varying levels of severity, but it is how we then emotionally process that which is fundamental. Being kind to yourself, taking support from the right people, knowing you are good and worthy and loved, knowing your story can help and inspire others. Be the change the world needs. Thank you Yennis Cheung for having the courage to bring this into public awareness and for having the heart to want to change the world for the better.
