Fulcrum BioEnergy's abrupt shutdown of their Nevada plant in May, designed to convert landfill waste into fuels, highlights the significant technical and financial challenges plaguing the sector. Oceania Biofuels' quiet withdrawal of their $500 million biofuels project from the approval process is another worrying sign. Even established players like Shell and BP are facing difficulties. Shell recently paused a planned HEFA biofuel plant in the Netherlands and pulled out of an agreement to back an e-SAF plant in Sweden, citing differing beliefs in project timelines. BP, meanwhile, has bought out its partner in a Brazilian ethanol project and paused planning for two renewable diesel/SAF plants, aiming to "simplify its portfolio" due to the risks associated with early-stage markets like SAFs. UPM Biofuels' recent delay in their Finnish plant, attributed to "recent market price volatility" and likely feedstock challenges, adds to the growing sense of unease.

All these companies face their own scaling sticking points, and one overarching challenge: meeting the large demand from airlines for fuel at the right price point. SAFs still come at a premium compared to conventional jet fuel, largely due to feedstock costs (both of the feedstock itself and coordinating sourcing it).
