In recent years, South America has emerged as a significant hub for textile and apparel manufacturing, following in the footsteps of South and Southeast Asian countries. Brazil, in particular, has stood out, exporting the highest value of fabrics in the region, totalling 1036.83 USD million over the past four years. For the period from 2020 to 2023, among the top fabric-exporting countries in South America, including Brazil, Colombia, Peru, Paraguay, and Chile, there has been a stable growth trend, peaking in 2022. Peru showed the highest growth rate at 23% over the last four years, followed by Paraguay with an 18% compound annual growth rate (CAGR), and Colombia and Brazil with 17% and 10%, respectively.
Creating a single pair of blue jeans uses a staggering 1,800 gallons of water just to grow enough cotton. And for that casual t-shirt hanging in your closet? It slurps up 400 gallons of water during its cotton cultivation. But wait, there's more – crafting the fabric, constructing the clothing, and other factors only add to the water footprint of each garment. Now, let's talk shoes: a single pair requires a whopping 2,250 gallons of water, while every pound of synthetic rubber used in their soles drinks up an additional 55 gallons.
