Helping Towns to Evolve

The case of Farnham in Surrey

Four years ago, the South East Region of the RIBA (Royal Institute of British Architects) initiated a study called "Recrafting Farnham", in which I joined a team of RIBA chartered architects to put forward ideas and engage in local discussions on the town's future.

Here is the output of our work, https://indd.adobe.com/view/37f241ce-b23b-4ab6-ae7f-b2eb5d69a2e2. Please post your comments and suggestions after looking at our assessment of the issues through diagrams, sketches, descriptions and questions.

We have been busy asking how the town can adapt to the challenges of increased traffic, rising population and new demands for more affordable housing. We also considered how to make the town greener, quieter and more sustainable and invites comments from any interested parties on its future shape and its incredibly strong character and identity.

What are your thoughts about the way towns like this can become more liveable while adapting to accommodate the essential features of modern life, including the natural environment in which they sit?

The model of the town will stay on view at the Maltings until December 2017 and our presentation of ideas can be viewed on LinkedIn at any time. In terms of Farnham's history and character, take a look at page 13, containing sketches by Harold Falkner, Maxwell Aylwyn and the still active Michael Blower, whose roots lie in the Arts and Crafts movement and mesh with the work of Edwin Lutyens. Stedman Blower Architects and the Blower Foundation continue to provide this initiative with valuable leadership.
