Imagine yourself being the most senior manager in your unit, or probably you were promoted as team lead or supervisor in your unit or department, with several others having to report to you. This new role would surely bring more challenges (opportunities and a higher risk exposure level). The normal thing is for superiors to pass on the pressures on subordinates. But the times these happens, we somehow reduce the efficiency of others in the team unknowingly.
Yes! There may be times when we have to be pushy and hard to drive home a point but at the end of the day, the unit has to win as a team. Helping them win is the most important part we all have to play because no one can exist in isolation. You may be a great staff but you need a good team to raise your greatness.
These 5 points below, would help optimize your ability to empower others and help them to grow:
- Show a strong sense of Identity: Let your team understand you know your functions, limitations and personal area of strengths they need to leverage on.
- Show a sense of Security: Allow them come to you and discuss whatever they feel would help improve the quality and output of the team. Once you show a sense of security, you hardly give room to the thoughts of anyone trying to out do or overtake you!
- Always empathize: “People don’t care how much you know, until they know how much you care”, showing your team members that you understand whatever distress or hard times they face on and off the job matters a lot to them as this can go a long way in motivating them for greater productivity.
- Sense of Vision and Purpose: No matter how tough things may tend to be at some point, reminding them to refocus on the need of the organization above those situation matters a lot.
- Sense of perspective: Seeing the bigger picture of tomorrow today. Helping them take a sneak peep into the future helps boost their productivity.
Wining is not everything, but wining with those that matters is surely very important and wining with the right people much more a priceless asset.
