Helping Harley!

On June 8, 2023, I received a message on my phone explaining that a dog that I had previously watched a year earlier was in danger of being euthanized due to severe skin issues and weight loss. This poor dog never got a fair chance, and unfortunately, her owner wasn’t able to afford the veterinary bills trying to solve Harley’s health problems. Their solution was simply to euthanize her. You can imagine my reaction. Initially, I was furious, disappointed, and slightly confused.

A year prior, when I saw Harley, I couldn’t even picture her having such a drastic decline. Boy, was I wrong, Harley’s condition had worsened, and she seemed to be surviving on borrowed time. Harley’s home wasn’t what I would ever have called livable or safe. Up to her rescue day, Harley had lived 75% of her life in an empty crate, sitting in her menstrual blood and filth. As a working field Labrador, she’s brilliant and driven. Her energy wasn’t understood, and instead of meeting her needs, she was mistreated. Not a life for any animal. Period.

After lots of investigation three days later Sully (my 3-year-old labrador) and I went to pick up Harley.

The moment my hand grabbed her leash, she pulled me to my car and jumped into the back seat with Sully. I cried the entire car ride home. The sick girl had a huge smile on her face. She knew she was being saved.
