Helping Charities To Grow Their Influence
This week I spoke at the Variety World Conference. It was an amazing opportunity to learn about a really inspiring organisation and to be educated by a wide variety of interesting people.
The topic of my talk was 'How To Influence To Have The Largest Impact On Our Cause'.
I covered 5 key areas:
- Why Influence Matters
- How Influence In The Modern World Is Different
- Online And Offline Influence- And Your Cause
- Other Practical Steps To Take Away
- A Challenge For You (the challenge was to get the audience to take action to influence a person or a group of people)
As much of my career has been spent in the charity sector, I know how difficult it can be both for charities to get attention when the general public has so many other things going on in their lives and also for charities to get attention when they are competing with each other. If charities can grow their influence- both online and offline, they have a way to cut through all the noise and get their message heard. It doesn't happen overnight, but with the resources the modern world affords us it is possible to achieve quite a lot even on a tiny budget- as I and my colleagues have been doing for nearly 5 years with Young Charity Trustees.
I used my LEAPS Model to help focus the audience's attention on different areas of influence that they need to think about:
L- Likeability
E- Expertise
A- Authenticity
P- Personal Brand
S- Synthesis
You can find more details about the model on my website here.

There were so many inspiring stories at the conference- I left before the main Awards dinner, but there were some very special guests:
How could your charity gain more influence? What would it do if it had it?
I'd love to hear from you if you'd be interested in discussing this topic further- I may be able to help!

8 年I really like the LEAPS model. It really makes sense. I think in my organisation we are good at LEAS but need to develop the Personal Brand bit if we can really make the change we could do in our system.
