Helping Bulls

Even if your job title doesn’t specify â€œmanager,” there’s a good chance you’ll need to handle some managerial duties at some point in your career as you move up the corporate ladder. And with sustainability exploding over the past several years, having a strong foundation of corporate rules build public trust. And although some will shake their heads in disagreement, it’s been proven that having a set of corporate rules in place improves a company’s sustainability performance.

A corporation without a sustainability strategy for reaching their goals is like a ship without a sail. There must be a clearly defined vision within any company as to where it intends to go.

1. Setting and following corporate rules allows us to reach our goals that benefit the business and allow for expansion opportunities for the company. Rules should be motivating and aspirational, as opposed to rigid or as just more issues that need to be dealt with. Each rule set forth is created to make a meaningful impact on the company’s environmental footprint and make logical business sense. From a corporate perspective, this is how a commitment to sustainability can be maintained.

2. Senior management follows the rules they set forth and are committed to reaching their goals. Aside from executing rules, following the rules is a crucial element within a corporation. This sets the tone for the entire organization and shows business partners and employees that company leadership views these rules as a stepping stone, which allows continued growth. Ideally, the CEO should be seen as the principle trailblazer of the company’s sustainability objectives and follows the rules set forth without fault.

4. By prioritizing corporate rules, companies are able to work towards their sustainability goals in areas where they have the most impact and will generate the largest return.  Implementation of corporate do’s and don’ts allows employee to focus on parts of the business where improvements are needed and are achievable.

5. Finally, it’s vital to deal organizational structure early on. Structural development should occur in direct proportion to work the company is doing, but it shouldn’t overtake and impede growth.

Being a leader means leading your team in a positive direction. Chaos leads to anarchy and eventually, many dissatisfied employees jump overboard. Setting the tone from the very beginning ensures that even new recruits understand your vision and why you have set the rules they are expected to follow.
