Helpful Tips For Managing The Return To School

The start of autumn means the summer holidays, and the long, hot days spent as a family, have drawn to a close. Children of all ages will be heading back into schools, colleges and nurseries, and the change of routine can be a challenge for everyone.

Whether your little ones are returning to a familiar educational setting or starting for the very first time, there’s plenty of ways to ease the transition. While some kids will happily trot into their school or nursery with no qualms, others might find it a little more challenging, which can be tricky for parents and children alike. Here are our best tips for managing the return to education.

Maintain a stable routine

All children benefit from structure and stability. Maintaining a sense of routine in and out of nursery/pre-school will help them know what to expect from their days. Keep your morning and afternoon routines as predictable as possible so they feel secure. Try and wake up, have breakfast and get ready for school at similar times and in the same order. You may find that your child begins leading the way once they have the routine ingrained!

Make the most of the weekends

As your children spend less time with you in the week, they will doubly appreciate quality time with you over the weekends. This can be anything from 10 minutes drawing or reading together, to family day trips. Anything where your child gets the benefit of your undivided attention will strengthen your bond.

Engage with their learning

Even if your children aren’t chatty yet you can still get involved in their learning and pick up where nursery leaves off. Not only does this help your children learn more effectively, it also creates some continuity for their day. Ask which songs or rhymes your little one is learning and sing them at home, or try some of the games they’ve been playing.?
