Help Your Team Sort Their Deeper "Why" from Distractions - Even When They Sometimes Look the Same

One of the topics that arises more than any other when I help clients is the idea of purpose:

Each of us have a deep essential need for meaning and purpose in our lives.

Not just any meaning though -

True meaning and purpose.

And when we have the first, but not the second, we can feel it. It causes discomfort, dis-ease, and even pain.

Through my experiences helping others distinguish these two and step into the latter, I see that the question of purpose, while often elusive or perplexing to people, is also paradoxical because it is not complex at all:

Purpose is found in the thing we fight for.

But what does that mean? It's not as simple as we would think.

For instance, we all have a primal AND inspired desire to protect our families.

But although family is some people’s true purpose, it’s not everyone’s - even when exclusively considering those who do have a family they love and are devoted to.

This is proven out by instances of those who love others and receive love while still feeling unfulfilled in purpose.

And when this fact is felt but not understood, it can be extremely destabilizing for someone who is deeply devoted to their family.?

No, for some, purpose is not synonymous to the people they hold dear.?

And it is such a personal matter, yet as significant as they come:

Purpose is the salt that makes the rest of the recipe flavorful.?

It is the undercurrent of our life story,

Our eternal, deeper Why.

It determines AND describes:

What is the truth you stand for?

What is the truth you guard?

What is the truth you defend?

What are you fighting for?

Every day we are expressing something -

With our actions?

With our thoughts

With our choices and decisions - even those that haven’t yet become actions -

Not only with our words or statements...

And this is the part that we often discount, or fail to understand:

Our full expression happens in the penumbra of our outward identity, in the lee of our lives.

Our full expression is what is happening on the inside.?

Whether or not it is witnessed, it is real.

It is a wheel that keeps spinning within us, producing light when tended to and honored -

It inherently occurs before we receive reward, and even if we never do.

Because no one is guaranteed reward for good deeds,

And no one will be compensated for doing what is right,

And yet, purpose makes it’s own reward.

I think this part is so important to understand because when hard times befall us,?or injustice seems to prevail,

If we believed that reward results from doing "right," we cannot help but think unwanted circumstances too result from some fault of our own.?

But this is simply not the case.?
