?? Help us help them

Hello

We know times are tough right now. But this Christmas, if you’ve got a few quid to spare, we’d love you to consider supporting our annual charity appeal.

Once again we’re teaming up with food bank Humans MCR to ensure no-one in Manchester goes hungry this Christmas. The Blackley-based charity does vital work all year round, delivering food parcels to around 400 families every week across Manchester, Salford , Trafford , Stockport , Rochdale and Bury .

All their food is delivered in unmarked vans so no one knows the people they help are getting support from a foodbank. And they give people in need a choice over what they eat, accommodating a range of diets including vegan, vegetarian, halal and gluten-free.

Last year's Christmas hamper campaign?

But the charity really pulls out all the stops with their Nobody Hungry At Christmas campaign, in which they work tirelessly to provide hampers containing a full Christmas dinner, as well as presents and treats for adults and children. Last year, the M.E.N’s campaign raised £13,844, thanks to the generosity of our readers, and friend of the paper Michael Josephson, who pledged to match the amount of donations raised.

That meant 840 families tucked into a home-cooked meal and presents on Christmas Day. And this year we’d love to raise even more.

Whatever you can donate is most welcome, but £12.50 will give a single person a food package for three days, while £36 will feed a family and £61 will provide a family with a Christmas hamper.

“Someone asked me one year whether I thought it was too much money to spend on one day,” said Humans MCR founder Lewey Hellewell. “It is a very expensive project to run. But the entire country stops on December 25. And the harm that is being done if you feel like you’re not part of that national celebration – I think it’s massive.”?

Almost there

From one M.E.N. campaign to another. And the huge appeal to save Salford Lads Club is almost over the line.

At the time of writing a staggering £227,000 has been raised in just one month. Now we need another £23,000 to secure the iconic club’s future. Chief reporter Neal Keeling has more here…

Trouble at the mill

Just down the road in Ordsall another landmark club is also facing uncertainty. Bosses at music and arts venue Islington Mill are worried that noise complaints could threaten its future after the council approved plans for 90 new homes nearby.

Their fears were shared by the Music Venue Trust who wrote to the council urging it to take measures to reduce chances of future residents being unable to cope with noise from events. And Coun Bob Clarke said the venue could end up in the same situation as Manchester's Night and Day Cafe, which went through a court case about noise levels impacting people living nearby the Northern Quarter venue.?Read more

First week nerves

Set-up your email, do an induction, maybe show your face in a meeting or two. Chances are Ruben Amorim’s first few days in the Old Trafford hot-seat might be a bit different to your average start in a new job.

He breezed into Carrington around 2.30pm yesterday and immediately got to work as Manchester United's new head coach. Here United writer Tyrone Marshall takes a look at what he’s got on his plate.

20’s plenty

Last week we reported how plans for a one-way system and 20mph speed limit in Ramsbottom town centre had divided opinion. And now the full details on the proposals have been published.

It could see Bridge Street reduced to a single lane and one-way between Garden Street and Bolton Street, with widened pavements. Kay Brow would become one way eastbound and speed bumps could be put down on Kay Brow, Railway Street and Bolton Street. Chris Gee has more here…
