The Energy Charter Treaty and Why We Need To Bring It Down?
Most people have never heard of ‘the Energy Charter Treaty’. It’s a giant international deal set up to establish a multilateral framework for cross-border cooperation in the energy industry. The problem is that it includes a court system that allows Big Business to Sue Whole Countries, using courts of their own making outside of the national legal system. These specially-created unjust courts are called ISDS, or ‘Corporate Courts’.?
- The fossil fuel industry uses Corporate Courts as a secret tribunal to deter climate action
- protecting big companies’ profits, while global temperatures soar to catastrophic levels
- For example Uniper, a fossil fuel based energy company, is suing the Netherlands for having a green policy of phasing out fossil fuels. And Ascent Resources, a UK company, is suing Slovenia for requiring an environmental impact assessment on fracking plans.
- The top five law suits add up to over $18 billion - potentially destined for corporate pockets. By comparison the whole annual climate funding given to the developing world by rich countries is only a little more: $19-22 billion. Climate change is destroying homes and livelihoods, spreading storms, floods and wild-fires. Rich countries need to help the most vulnerable around the world. Instead the companies most implicated in climate change want to grab the money.
- Global Justice Macclesfield is calling for the UK Government to exit the Energy Charter Treaty and ban Corporate Courts.
- Please join our peaceful demo/march in Macclesfield on Saturday 21st May
- Meet at 11am on Exchange St (near Tesco carpark – listen out for the sound of drums!) Any queries please email: [email protected]
