Help and Relationship

As a kid with no special attributes, talent, or tenacity for things kids my age had an affinity for at the time like dancing, choreography, singing, and lots more that makes parents and guardians feel elated and proud of their wards. However, I sure enjoyed listening to tales by the moonlight and soccer(ball elédò and pánke) at the local street of Oke-Dalemo, Ayekale at Ibadan.

On one of those days, you leave the house whole with the hope that you'd get back in peace and one piece, after playing the 'police catch thief' game I got back home to my grandma on the back of a friend who was a little bit older than me and four other kids of my age as an entourage - LOL I got home in one piece but with a bent forearm. One could easily guess what my grandma was thinking with the bizarre expression plastered on her face. The boastful entourage who had promised to stay till I get treated left at the door at the sight of my grandpa after my grandma exclaimed with a resounding "Ah! iwo omo Yi" (Ah! You this child). Before I could say 'Jack Robinson' I was already in the car with my grandparents headed for the University College Hospital, Ibadan, where we were told the pediatrician just left on his annual leave a day earlier.

Meanwhile, I was doing like 'elemi geisha' (someone who wants to give up the ghost) while my grandma was petrified and grandpa seemed like an unmovable mountain in the green forest with a calm face reminiscent of still water. He later went into an office and came out not quite long then I was wheeled in... I got treated by the same doctor they'd said was on his annual leave. Little did I know that grandpa had made moves behind the cotton to get him to come to treat his grandchild.

Some years after that I left the city of Ibadan for Iwo in Osun State to stay with my parents and an old man had just passed away not long after I got back who happened to be the Baale Oke-Isaji, Ajangbala Eleha in Iwo. A lot of notable people came to pay their final tributes to him and the former governor of Osun state, Chief Bisi Akande was among them which made my parents and many other grown persons fall into deep confusion as he was quite a humble and simple person while he lived but soon realized it was no wonder he was able to help so many people get employed and sponsored willing students in his community to both secondary school and higher institution even with weak financial capacity - no one knows of his relationship with top people in the society in his days other than his closest allies (it was said that most of his kids didn't even know till his demise).

I grew up in an opposing environment with two common things:

1. Inability to get enough adequate resources when due

2. The power of relationship

I have decided to reiterate the need for us to build more on the latter while we strive to get the former.

Money is good and key to having a desirable life/lifestyle but:

1. My grandpa was able to bring back a doctor on leave to work to help me get healthy leveraging on his relationship with the doctor's elder brother; he had the money to settle whatever bills were given to us but there was no consultant on the ground as most of them were preoccupied as at the time of our arrival at the hospital.

2. Baale was able to leverage his unknown long-term relationship with people in power at the time to push people considered to be helpless and hopeless become people of note in today's society.

This is one of the life lessons that has helped many great men home and abroad, mine inclusive so much even when I have no notable figures in the bank (yet) when but times are changing and so are the figures.

Help will always flow wherever a relationship thrives and the relationship will always thrive in good faith with mutual effort. I hope this piece helps you to invest in relationships with people both online and offline - Never forget we all need help.
