Help Me... Help You...

Last week my 17-year-old daughter was home from France for fall break. I was working on finishing my second book, Design the LONG Life You Love. My 16-year-old daughter was debating whether she could do basketball (what she wants) and still study hard (what she needs). There was also bureaucratic stuff, insurance and otherwise, that I needed to take care of for my mom in Turkey.
I found myself in turns helping my older daughter go back to France even though we all wanted her to stay here another week and trying to help my younger daughter resolve her dichotomy about school and basketball. While I was helping them, I was asking my 80+-year-old uncle, my go-to person about life, for help with the insurance for my mom. Leah helped with my book and kept me going and upbeat, as usual.?
I can map my whole week in terms of giving help and getting help between generations. It was like I was living my book while I was writing it.
Do you ever wonder why younger people often want help, and older people give help? I do.?I also wonder if I will ever reach my uncle's?level of wisdom.
This week I'll be joined by the amazing?Deborah (Debbie) Heiser, PhD , Founder of?The Mentor Project . Debbie taught me when we're younger, we're built to receive, and when we're older, we're built to give. This is the founding idea for The Mentor Project, which boasts some of the most successful people on the planet on their list of mentors.?
Debbie will show us the art of helping others and receiving help. The kind of reciprocity she's going to demonstrate is the fabric of life.?What I love about Debbie's work is the reciprocity between generations.??
Listen to Debbie's TEDx talk?here ?and tune into? The Mentor Project Podcast ?hosted by my super friend, Ruth Gotian, to learn more.
See you!

3 年Ayse, On your comment of the young asking for help and the old giving help. I think when your young - you many think you know everything ,but really you are finding your way. When young we are also more insecure and selfish. We are in learning mode and trying to understand "self" and somewhat unaware of others. As we mature, we gain experience, recognize that we can learn from others and be open. We are then more willing to give than to receive.
