Help keep your Facebook account safe

Help keep your Facebook account safe

I don’t profess to be an expert on social media security but a few things have become apparent to me this last week since we’ve been trying to get Suzy’s Facebook account back online.

I’m sure there’s a lot more to be added but these are some of the basics that I know many use almost daily!! I’ve also added some notes at the end to help you clean up who can see your data.

  • DO NOT log into other websites using your Facebook account. Use the email option instead.
  • DO NOT use the Apps such as ‘Nametest” or if you do, do not add them to your?timeline as then they are stored and have access to all your data.
  • DO NOT play the games, for the same reason as above.
  • DO NOT sponsor anyone through Facebook pay… your payment details are stored. In return don’t set up a sponsor page on Facebook, use one of the sites such as “just giving”.
  • DO NOT use a paid ad account. Your card details/ PayPal are stored! This is how money was taken from Suzy’s account. Instructions on how to remove your card are detailed at the end of this article.
  • If using public wifi where you have to input your email and a password…..use an email address NOT connected to your Facebook profile (or other sites you log into which will hold your private data) and DO NOT use the same password as you may use for multiple accounts. (I believe hackers can set up a fake wifi so they get all your details as soon as you sign up!!)
  • Before responding to anything you may get about your hacked account, read it carefully and check the source before clicking on anything.?
  • If you get a friend request from someone you’re already connected with, they may have been hacked. Don’t message this new profile, either report the profile as being a fake (Facebook will ask you to verify the real account….it’s easy) or contact the person directly through other means to let them know.
  • NEVER click on a link sent by PM unless you know it’s genuine. If unsure, message the person and ask….often they’ve clicked on such a link themselves and that gives the hacker access to all their friend connections when they then spam them all. You can change your friend settings so only you have access….that helps security for everyone else too.

To check Apps and Websites connected with your account?(if using the APP version)…..

  • Select Menu at the bottom right of the page
  • Scroll to “Settings and Privacy”?
  • Scroll to the “Permissions” section
  • Select “Apps and websites”

To check Apps and Websites connected with your account?(if using the desktop version)…..

Click on the black drop down arrow at the top right hand side of the page.

  • Select “Settings and Privacy”
  • Select “Settings”
  • On the left hand side, select “Apps and websites.

You should now be able to see how many APPS and websites are connected to your account that will have access to all your data….you can remove these but will have to do them individually.

TO REMOVE YOUR CARDS AND/OR PAYPAL

Follow the instructions as in the above article as to whether you are on desktop or phone.?

At SETTINGS AND PRIVACY?

select SETTINGS…….

if on a desktop....on the left hand side, scroll down to AD PAYMENTS.?

That will show what cards/paypal you have set up to pay for any ads.?

NEXT.....go back to the previous screen and this time select FACEBOOK PAY, this will show you what cards you have used for any sponsorships you may have done or other purchases on Facebook.?

You just select each card and/paypal and remove them.

If on a phone,….once you have selected SETTINGS

at the top part of the screen it will state ACCOUNT

PAYMENTS is the 3rd option down. Select that and the screen will show both Facebook Pay ans Ads Payment. You need to go through each one separately. You cna remove the payment method by selecting it.

Hope that helps.?If any techie people have some other great advice please post in the comments.?

Thanks all. Stay safe.

Meanwhile I've had the same issue and have been waiting over 30 days. I have notified Facebook of this report and told them of their sheer blatant disregard for equality and fairness and only acting in their self interests. Well done Suzy. truly epic work.
