 How to QUIT?

Many times when it comes to quitting, you go through all the different things it can play out in your head. What happens next is that you completely go into overthinking about quitting and you almost become paralyzed with fear. Then you start saying to yourself is this a good idea? Maybe you should not Quit? Maybe you should stay? All these emotions just take over.

First and foremost, obviously, you’ve already been thinking about quitting. For whatever reason it might be, whether it’s moving, a new position, frustration with a manager or you’re just not happy with your job. So you’ve already gone through the psychological part of quitting – you’re ready for new job interviews, you’re ready to quit.

What’s important to remember – never quit before you’re fully cleared to start a new position. Never ever quit until you got the green light from the new employer that your background check is done and you are a GO. And that you have signed your offer letter and it's all official. That's when you can give your notice. Not a moment before.

Standard time frame is 2 weeks - but some firms may literally escort you out of the office the minute you quit. So be ready!

So when should you give notice? And when and how? Take a deep breath. You are not the first one or the last one to Quit. The most simple way is making it simple! Pick a Friday or Monday, go to your direct supervisor and give your notice. I usually prefer Fridays as this way you have the weekend to decompress. And this way Monday the shock is behind everyone else and business continues to transition you out of the role and someone else into your role.

Best Practices for Resignation:

  • Resign in a professional way – less is more.
  • You don’t have to get into it! It’s your decision how much you want to share. Details about your future and reasons for quitting don't have to be shared - so don't feel obligated to do so.
  • You always will need them as a reference. Keep that in mind. So give them the full 2 weeks to allow the firm to get your role covered in a professional way.
  • Zip the lip. Learn what you need to learn and move on.
  • Say â€œI need to speak with you. Do you have a few minutes? I have bad news for you. I’ve been giving this a thought and I’ve decided that I need to quit. I need to explore other options. I regretfully have to give you 2-week notice effective immediately.”

Don’t give Quitting a lot of power!

Don’t stress over quitting and don’t overthink it. The truth is – most likely, they don’t really care. Especially, if it’s a junior role. They’re used that young people quitting - it happens and upper management is used to it. If you are a more seasoned and experience manager or executive, sometimes a 4 week notice is best and this may be taken harder by the department. So be ready.

Leave on a good note – give them all the necessary details about your projects.

Make sure that you leave on excellent terms. Remember you may need them for a reference, so the last thing you want to do is upset them in any way, or not disclose all your current projects. By law, employers don't have to provide any type of reference. They just need to state your "start date and end date". THAT'S IT. They don't need to state anything else, and if you insist, it will have to be in writing and usually it would just add your official job titles. They won't even say "you quit or you were fired" - usually firms will say" start date and end date" - why? As it keeps everyone safe. But - there are also no guarantees and one never knowns who knows whom.

So remember to quit gracefully - we are all human and we all deserve to grow and expand our career as we see fit for ourselves.

Good luck with your job search!
