Help Children in Need Through Operation Christmas Child
Yes, we're going to be those people that start talking about Christmas as soon as Halloween is over...but for good reason! The season of giving is upon us and what better way to give than to those less fortunate. Charities of many kinds are extra busy this time of year spreading love and keeping the true meaning of the season alive.
A Richmond favorite is Samaritan's Purse International Relief's Operation Christmas Child that began in 1993. Since it's beginning it has become the world’s largest Christmas project of its kind. The program uses gift-filled shoeboxes to demonstrate God’s love in a tangible way to children in need around the world. To date, they have collected and delivered more than 135 million shoeboxes to children in more than 150 countries and territories and this year their hope is to collect enough gifts to reach another 12 million children. Pretty amazing!

This charity is one that The Susan Morris Team and Covenant Building and Design are both very passionate about. Megan Gregoire of CBD heads up the collection at her church, Matoaca Christian Fellowship, every year and this year their goal is to fill 120 shoeboxes. To help them, Covenant Building and The Susan Morris Team will be collecting donations at our model home in the Graythorne section of Rountrey (3801 Graythorne Drive Midlothian, VA) until Saturday, November 12 so that they are ready for shoebox packing day that Sunday, November 13. Items they are still in need of are as follows:
- Boys' Tshirts: sizes Youth Large-Adult Small
- Girls' Tshirts: sizes Youth Medium-Adult Small
- Jump ropes
- Adult sunglasses (most needed)
You can also fill a shoebox yourself and drop it off at any Operation Christmas Child drop-off location the week of November 14-21 or visit the Operation Christmas Child website and pack one online. The site also has information on all drop-off locations, ideas for filling boxes, and how to do so. Another great resource is your local Hobby Lobby store that has everything you need, plus a guide and boxes to fill all in one place. For a small donation at samaritanspurse.org/occ you can even track your box online to discover where in the world the gift is delivered. And don't think this is just something you can participate in during the holidays. Samaritan's Purse will send gifts year round and the website has more information on this as well.
Just look at all of these beautiful kid's smiling faces and see just how much these small gifts mean to them. It makes their entire year to receive these treasures from people like you around the world! Consider participating in some way this year to Operation Christmas Child and give a child in need hope and happiness that lasts them a lifetime.
