The Project:

Our primary purpose is to bring good cheer to our community through outstanding beer produced in Statesville's first brewery. We envision 1789 Brewery & Taphouse as a comfortable gathering spot for all to enjoy delicious, handcrafted beer in a welcoming environment. A cozy beer garden will be the perfect outdoor setting to enjoy our warm southern climate. 

 

The Beer:

With a focus on quality over quantity, we will use the finest ingredients available to produce an exceptional product. All of our beer is handcrafted with care and held to the highest standards.

Flavorful, refreshing, unfiltered deliciousness created fresh for you to enjoy straight from the source. The beers in our Signature Collection are classic styles, rooted in European tradition, crafted with American flair. The line-up includes, but is not limited to, an American IPA, a Tart Gose or Berliner Wiesse, an English Pale Ale, an Irish Stout, a German Golden Lager, a Czech Dark Lager, a Belgian Wit, and a Hefeweizen.

We plan to have 6 of our Signature Collection beers on tap at all times, but we also love experimenting with new flavors and brewing fun, eccentric beers. A constant rotation of seasonal specialties, barrel-aged projects, collaborations, and experimental batches of our own will be among the 20 different choices featured in the 1789 Taphouse.

It is important for us to host a wide variety of local and international guest taps, so we always have an appealing beverage available for everyone. Hard cider, kombucha, sparkling soda, and cold-pressed coffee will also be on hand for gluten-free and alcohol-free options.

 

Homebrew Supply:

There is a definite void in the homebrew supply market in our area. Local homebrewers need access to ingredients and equipment without going out of town, ordering online, or worrying that the store is closed when they need a last minute item. We plan to have a small homebrew supply shop connected to the Taphouse to give homebrewers the option to shop locally. 

Community Enrichment:

1789 Brewery & Taphouse will be the first of its kind in historic Statesville. Our goal is to not only build a successful business for ourselves, but to run an organization that will benefit our community as a whole. We will play a fundamental role in the continued revitalization and growth of our city, bringing in new jobs and attracting other businesses to the area. We look forward to sponsoring established community events and creating other civic-minded events of our own. We will also help develop and organize educational courses for those interested in learning more about beer and the brewing process.

We would love to see 1789 become a beer destination and put Statesville on every beer traveler's map. At the crossroads of I-77 & I-40, Statesville is the perfect pit stop for travelers heading to and from the popular beer destinations of Asheville, Raleigh, and Charlotte. Thanks to our beautifully renovated downtown streetscape, a greenway that rivals any large city, and a dog park project underway, Statesville has just been named Tree City USA and is an even lovelier place to work and play. 

Community Tap:

We plan to give back to our community by joining forces with local charities and donating all profits from one specially designated tap, the Community Tap. Every quarter, the winner of our charity raffle will get to choose their favorite local charity as well as have a say in the beer that is served from the Community Tap. Profits from the Community Tap for the next three months will be given to the charity of choice.   

Why 1789?

We chose the name 1789 Brewing Company for its historical significance and unique simplicity. In 1789, the Iredell County settlement known as Fourth Creek Congregation was officially renamed Statesville. 1789 is the year the Province of North Carolina became the 12th state to join the Union. North Carolina University, now known as UNC - Chapel Hill, received its charter in 1789. George Washington's Presidential inauguration was held on April 30, 1789. We could go on, but that would spoil the fun, as we plan to use these historical facts in our beer names! 

Risks & Challenges:

Of course there are risks involved when starting any new business venture. Adequate funding is essential to the success of 1789 Brewing Company. Most of the building renovations will be done ourselves, but we will eventually have to hire contractors. Shipping delays will most likely be an issue. Acquiring the proper licenses will probably involve yards of government red tape. 

While running a brewery sounds like a lot of fun, it is also very labor intensive. Lucky for us, brewing beer is our passion, so the hard work is a genuine labor of love. We realize we will have to jump through many hoops before our doors open to the public, but we shall overcome! And we welcome you along for the ride.

Pick your favorite style of beer, and we'll sit down together as a tasting committee to come up with a new recipe for the 1789 Brewery. We will bring in several commercial examples of the style you choose, and taste each one to help us come up with the perfect recipe for your beer. You can also help us brainstorm ideas for the name of your beer. VIP seating and dinner for you and 5 of your closest friends on the day the beer is released. A Brewer's Shirt Pack is also included with this perk. 

$500 - Assistant Brewer for a Day + Brewer's Shirt Pack

Get your feet wet inside the Brewery by assisting our Brewmaster with his daily tasks! You'll learn the basics of handcrafting beer from start to finish. When the beer is ready to serve, we will throw a special release party in your beer's honor, with a VIP table for you and 9 of your closest friends. A great perk for individuals, corporations, clubs, and special interest groups alike!

Wondering what the heck is a fermenter? A fermenter is a large stainless steel tank where yeast turns wort (water, malt, and hops) into beer through a process called fermentation. Ales typically take 21 days to ferment, while lagers take even longer. Fermenters are the most important components of the brewery. The more fermenters, the better, so we can ferment a good variety of beers at the same time.
