Hello World - The Why of Monday Memos
The Monday Memo is a concept that is widely used and one I have considered leveraging,... and today I will start my first memo ever.
The purpose of the Monday Memo is to align the company and improve communication. As we embark on the next stage of Embrace, we plan to scale. In fact, you may not have realized it but we are hiring more than 1 person a week. This adds up to 52 in a year, and our goals to grow are even higher! Scale is not just hiring but endeavoring to improve every aspect of Embrace before we hire.
For many of you, I will sadly become more distant and we will talk less and less. For others, I have not even met you and had a chat! For both the distance and lack of personal interaction, I truly apologize. While I plan to make changes to improve my communication as we scale, these changes for me (and for you) are inevitable... and exciting!
My weekly memo will vary - I will take on key scale topics like embedding culture in recruiting, common questions like how do I value my shares, and highlight my thoughts on key milestones - both wins and losses. The goal is "innovation through experimentation". Think of these memos as my focus on two cultural tenants - PERSPECTIVE and INVESTING. And I expect and am excited to see you all to do the same for your teams, goals, and individual lives.
→ The key to scaling is experimentation. The fact that we are no longer co-located has forced us to experiment. In many ways, we have already adapted to our next headcount milestone. We changed how we communicate with Tuesday and Thursday KPI & Kudos meetings. We evolved our Weekly Wrap-Up on Friday. Our onboarding processes changed... And Im sure you have made changes for your teams as well. Keep in mind, none of these new approaches will work as we approach 75... 100...150 people. For us to continue to succeed, you must OWN it. Don't sit idly back and expect to be happy with where things end up. You must be the agent of change by experimenting with small daily processes, weekly meetings, and quarterly planning. The biggest failure is not making those changes, communicating them, and recognizing mistakes quickly. The biggest successes are making quick changes and working with your teammates to improve and be the best we can be!
