META FACES CALL IN EU NOT TO USE PERSONAL DATA FOR AI MODELS
A Meta plan to use personal data to train its artificial intelligence (AI) models without seeking consent came under fire from advocacy group NOYB on Thursday, which called on privacy enforcers across Europe to stop such use.
NOYB (none of your business) urged national privacy watchdogs to act immediately, saying recent changes in Meta's privacy policy, which come into force on June 26, would allow it to use years of personal posts, private images or online tracking data for the Facebook owner's AI technology.
"If Meta wants to use your data, they have to ask for your permission. Instead, they made users beg to be excluded," says one expert. (Read)
BANKS MUST TAKE FULL RESPONSIBILITY WHEN USING AI, SAYS EU WATCHDOG ??
Banks, investment firms and financial institutions in the EU must champion boardroom responsibility and their legal obligations to protecting clients when using AI, according to the EU securities watchdog in its first statement on AI.
According to McKinsey, gen AI could add between $200 billion and $340 billion in value annually across the global banking sector – largely through increased productivity
But while AI holds significant promise in enhancing investment strategies and client services while reducing time spent on menial tasks, it also presents inherent risks that cannot be fully understood yet, reports the European Securities and Markets Authority (ESMA). (Read)
MICHIGAN DATA CENTER LAWS “CLEARLY A NIGHTMARE” ?
Michigan Democrats are poised to pass legislation aimed at attracting big-tech data centres - but opponents say the bills could destroy nation-leading climate laws due to the massive amounts of electricity being consumed.?
A domino effect that could trigger the use of gas or coal plants to keep the data centres running would put an end to Michigan's climate legislation that requires 100% renewable energy by 2040.
Michigan isn’t alone, as data centers are quickly emerging as a serious threat to the nation’s climate goals. Demanding up to 50x more energy than the typical office building and capable of drawing up to 5m gallons of water daily for cooling systems, these ongoing negotiations could prove to be vital for the future of how data is stored and accessed.
OPEN AI, DEEPMIND EMPLOYEES WARN ABOUT AI RISKS ??
A group of current and former employees at OpenAI and Google DeepMind have raised serious concerns about the future of the technology - specifically citing how the "financial motives of AI companies hinder effective oversight".

It further warns of risks from unregulated AI, ranging from the spread of misinformation to the loss of independent AI systems and the deepening of existing inequalities, which could result in "human extinction".
The open letter is also the latest to raise safety concerns around generative AI technology, which can quickly and cheaply produce human-like text, imagery and audio. (Read)
TRYING TO TAME AI: SEOUL SUMMIT FLAGS HURDLES TO REGULATION??
At the end of this week's AI safety summit in Seoul, South Korea, the UK touted the big achievement of the creation of a global network of AI safety institutes. But the differences between talking about regulation and making it happen is very different - especially when it comes to execution.
"Regulating AI makes as much sense as regulating electric motors. It's very difficult to say, "How do we make an electric motor safe?" without just building very small electric motors" - Andrew Ng, ex-Google Brain Founder.
With AI predicted to surpass human intelligence within the next 5 years, experts suggest the need for proper regulation is bigger now than ever before... (Read)
