Hello

Hello

Hey everyone! ??

I'm Roman, the founder of The Brief App for Architects and Urban Designers. I'm here to introduce myself as we embark on this exciting journey, and I hope you'll join us along the way!

I wear many hats—I'm a Design Director, Architect, and Urban Designer and the creative mind behind The Brief. But it took me nearly 20 years to reach this point.

As a kid, I always had a knack for drawing, and thanks to my awesome grandparents' genes, I was pretty good at it! Naturally, animation and filmmaking captured my interest, and with the first PC at home, I immersed myself in the technical aspects of these fields.

I dived into Linux, Blender, and CYCAS, mastering 3D modelling, rigging, and animation. The incredible work of Ed Catmull and the creative genius John Lassiter truly inspired me.

In 2002, I enrolled in an Architectural University, expecting a perfect blend of art and technology. Well, turns out I was wrong! It was an old-school education, where everything had to be done by hand—drawings, graphics, calculations—you name it! We had arts, sculpture, painting, and a boatload of engineering classes.

To keep up with my love for technology, I'd spend late nights tinkering with my PC, learning Python scripting for Blender. Looking back, I'm incredibly grateful for that educational journey. It gave me a massive artistic advantage that I still tap into every single day. It taught me to think and create without solely relying on machines.

Being a huge fan of computer graphics, I read about this young entrepreneur, Steve Jobs, who invested in Pixar and revolutionized animated filmmaking. After graduation, I got my hands on my very own iMac G3, bidding farewell to PCs forever. It was love at first click!

I actually had a green one, absolutely loved it ??

As I delved into the professional world, I eagerly adopted various software, often venturing into uncharted territory. Maya, early versions of ArchiCAD and Revit, and Rhino became my trusted companions. Learning new tools became second nature to me.

I've always been up for a challenge, and with limited internet access, I had to figure things out on my own. I took great pride in my skills. That is until I encountered SketchUp.

SketchUp transformed the way I thought about user experience and application design. It made me realize that complex tools often hinder design flow, shifting the focus from the design problem itself. SketchUp brought back the joy I had experienced during my university days when drawing by hand felt truly magical—no distractions, just pure creativity with pencils and paper, those universal tools.

Sadly, not much changed in the AEC software realm as time passed. If anything, it became more bewildering for new users.

Today, I am building The Brief - an Urban Design tool that combines my passion for the arts and architecture, draws inspiration from the brilliant engineers and artists at Pixar and Apple, and is influenced by SketchUp, the liberating tool for architects. I firmly believe that true magic happens when technical and creative minds come together in perfect harmony!?

So, welcome aboard, and let's create something extraordinary together!??

Very cool to read the backstory and see the accompanying images. Curious readers can hear Roman tell some of his story and talk about his work in architecture and on The Brief here too: https://trxl.co/090
