Being welcomed into the Frazer-Nash family has allowed me to see the intersection between science & engineering, data & digital and social & policy where societal innovation happens. Where we move from consumers of stuff to citizens of our planet.
?At Frazer-Nash I am fully ensconced in thinking about the ways to do this with digital innovation to make lives safe, secure, sustainable and affordable.
With challenging times ahead, recovery from a pandemic, effects of climate change and an ever-evolving work life, many of us are finding inspiration in welcoming the next wave of human evolution to an AI augmented, inclusive and sustainable world.?
?How do we create this future?
By recognising the power of thought to construct our world, as did physicist David Bohm. He reminds us to appreciate how much of our world comes from our imagination to see the great power of thought to bring innovation into the world.
Next, we need to bring commercial viability to innovation. For example:
Sundrop Farm, a leader in sustainable horticulture, growing high-quality crops in arid areas utilizing renewable resources: seawater and sunlight, wanted to extend to produce 15,000 tonnes of tomatoes. Their clever systems integrate solar collectors, desalination technology, electricity production and climate control, solving the energy and water security issues in agriculture. Frazer-Nash was able to conduct a technical due diligence assessment of the project’s feasibility. Using engineering techniques developed specifically for the renewable energy industry, the assessment provided structured factual information for the developers and addressed the project’s high-level claims on behalf of project investors. This essentially allowed for the investment to drive the expansion.

Emerging technology like artificial intelligence & machine learning are key elements in creating sustainable change. Being part of the Gravity Challenge has been an amazing way to see the way engineering can play a pivotal role in using space data to greatly improve energy transmission. The Frazer-Nash team was selected by ElectraNet to create a vision for a digital twin for transmission optimisation with machine learning. The Gravity Challenge approach to demand-driven challenges is creating real commercial impact both for both challengers and innovators.

So much can be done when we think about our sustainability challenges from the point of view of creating commercial value. It generates new ways of looking at the environment like carbon sequestration, biofuels for aviation, long duration energy storage and green hydrogen.
