Crown Linen Service's VP of Operations, Frank Gagne

RFID technology in the Commercial Laundry Industry has been around for a while, and for Frank Gagne, V.P. of Operations of Crown Linen Service in Mexico, MO shares some best practices he wishes he knew sooner.

One thing I wish I had known before I started this project is that no one has all the answers to how the technology will work for Crown because every operation is different. We all are in the same business of servicing the Hospitality, Medical, and Food and Beverage industry and one thing I enjoy the most is the networking we do. We share information and best practices to help each other grow.

RFID technology information can be shared but you must be able to put your own twist on the process for it to work for your circumstances. RFID in a commercial laundry takes the plant to a whole new level of operational excellence. The struggle is real, the frustration is real, the benefits are overwhelming in a very good way.

ITU Absorbtech's Chairman of the Board, Jim Leef

At the beginning of 2025, Jim Leef from ITU AbsorbTech announced his transition from CEO to Chairman of the Board. He took the time to share with us some of his key learnings over the past 4 decades.

Meet Jim!

Jim Leef, with 45 years of experience at ITU AbsorbTech, reflects on the lessons learned throughout his career.

"The thing that I said that I am most proud of is the record that we have of customers that are delighted to do business with us. The secret sauce on that is personal contact and figuring out how to get out of the red water," Jim shared in reference to a book called Blue Ocean Strategies. He said that book helps guide ITU AbsorbTech and how they run the business.

"A Blue Ocean is when you've got nothing but open space in front of you because you do something that nobody else does. And Red Ocean is the opposite. Red Oceans represent existing, highly competitive markets where companies fight for a limited customer base all the time. Red Ocean, is what the uniform business is in.

It looks like a commodity. People do about the same things. Getting away from Red Oceans, it is not just about being personal and friendly and doing what you say you're going to do, but by behaving unlike Red Ocean companies and being obsessed with it. With this, we almost never lose customers that we don't want to lose," Jim said.

Reflecting on his lifelong career, he values the meaningful face-to-face interactions and the opportunity to work with individuals who share these values.

Amtex Innovations' Marketing and Sales Director, Kasey Wahl

There is something about the textile rental industry that once you are in it long enough, some say, you are in it for life. Marketing and Sales Director at Amtex Innovations, Kasey Wahl agrees with this philosophy and shares how important it is to keep knowledge within the industry, regardless of where you work.

I have been told many times the laundry industry is a large “small world” in a way. We are all over the world yet connected in many, many ways. This has led many of the leaders in this industry to not only become acquaintances by idea sharing and attending events but also become great friends. There is a fair amount of individuals every year that switch from one company to another within the industry.

Overall, people going from one laundry to another or going from one supplier to another helps keep some continuity within the industry. The knowledge and skills learned at one organization can assist you with your new product or to a new company.

Yes, the industry has some overlap but continuing to expand each individual’s skillset and knowledge elevates our industry as a whole. The industry is consistently getting more education and we are seeing these benefits all around us.
