Every February 21st, the United Nations observes International Mother Language Day to celebrate linguistic and cultural diversity.?In honour of this day, we have dedicated our monthly newsletter to understanding cultures.?

As a #translation and in-language communication provider, people often think our primary job is translating languages. And while that is undoubtedly a big part of it, language is just one aspect of our work.?

In fact, we often like to say that we are translating cultures, not just words. Why?

  • Language is just one part of a people, and within each language, a culture is tied to it.
  • Culture is what contextualises language. It provides the framework within which language is understood, used, and interpreted.
  • Culture tells a story of art, literature, music and heritage.

This month, take some time to explore and learn about a different culture from one of your colleagues or friends, including the intricacies within them and the unique stories they have to share through their native language.

Understanding CALD

As Australia works on embracing diversity and multiculturalism, we explored the definitions created to help Australians navigate this space.

CALD, which stands for “culturally and linguistically diverse”, was introduced in 1999 as a bureaucratic acronym commonly used in public and community sectors to refer to individuals raised in families where a language other than English was spoken and whose cultural values and upbringing differed from those of English-speaking society.

“At its core, CALD is meant to be an inclusive term that encapsulates the essence of coexistence and unity, regardless of differences, and acknowledges the cultural and linguistic diversity that makes up Australian society.”
