2022 was an exciting year, developments in the world caused turmoil. But it was also a year in which many developments gained momentum. Weather conditions were again erratic and unusual. At the time of this newsletter, there is even talk of a "winter heat wave."

Significant steps forward were taken at?SmartFarm?in the past year. We worked hard to continue the rollout in Europe. Improvements were also made to the hardware and software and we tested new decision support tools to introduce in the future. These include new possibilities for insect control and tools for the use of biological control agents.

Of course, we cannot do this without our customers and users. Therefore, we would like to thank everyone for the good cooperation over the past year, and we look forward to 2023 and wish all growers a successful crop year!

Winter heat wave and insect control

The 16.9 degrees measured in Eindhoven on Jan. 1, 2023, was basically as extreme as the record temperatures of recent summers. In seven European countries, Jan. 1 was the warmest January day on record.

"By winter standards this is really a kind of heat wave, if it had been summer now we would have had temperatures around 40 degrees," said Maurice Middendorp of Buienradar. "These temperatures really just belong to May or June."

And it didn't just happen in the Netherlands. Poland even had 19 degrees and the Czech Republic 19.6. Denmark, Belarus, Lithuania and Latvia also recorded temperature records. In Germany, it was 12 degrees warmer than normal.
