Helene Hurricane Affected Millions of People! What Could Have Been Done?
Hurricane Helene caused widespread destruction in the southeastern United States, claiming dozens of lives and resulting in billions of dollars in damages.
On September 26, Helene transitioned into a post-tropical cyclone after impacting millions of people across the southeastern United States. The hurricane left over three million people without power throughout the weekend.
On Thursday night, Helene made landfall in Florida's Big Bend region as a Category 4 hurricane with wind speeds of 225 kilometers per hour (140 mph). It then rapidly moved through Georgia, the Carolinas, and Tennessee, toppling trees, destroying homes, and causing river flooding.
Hurricanes are classified into five categories based on their intensity. If wind speeds range between 119-153 km/h (74-95 mph), it is categorized as Category 1. Speeds between 154-178 km/h (96-110 mph) classify as Category 2, while 179-209 km/h (111-129 mph) winds are considered Category 3. Category 4 hurricanes have wind speeds of 210-250 km/h (130-156 mph), and anything exceeding 250 km/h (157 mph or higher) is classified as Category 5.
The National Hurricane Center had announced that the hurricane was expected to pass over the Tennessee Valley on September 28 and 29. Flash flood warnings remained in effect for the southern and central Appalachian regions, while strong wind warnings were issued for parts of Tennessee and Ohio. However, according to the latest reports, the death toll from the hurricane has risen to 130.
In North Carolina, a dam collapsed into a lake, leading to the evacuation of nearby neighborhoods. In Newport, Tennessee, a town with a population of approximately 7,000, evacuations were also carried out due to concerns about a dam, although authorities later confirmed that the structure had not failed.
Tornadoes in Nash County, North Carolina, left four people seriously injured and caused significant damage in some areas.
Experts estimate that Hurricane Helene will result in financial losses ranging from $15 billion to $26 billion in the southeastern United States
