Helena O'Callaghan - Rising Through Challenges to Success

Helena O'Callaghan, currently an Associate at Xeinadin, discovered her passion for accounting early in life. Her journey began with a work placement at an accountancy firm, which ignited her interest. She pursued her studies in accounting and finance, eventually completing her ACCA and making her way up the ranks from Trainee Accountant to Associate over two decades.?

During her time as a Trainee Accountant, Helena thrived in a supportive environment, surrounded by colleagues who spurred on each other's growth. She continued her progress to become the only trainee kept on in her firm. Over time, she created strong client relationships and transitioned into a managerial role, where she excelled in supporting both clients and colleagues.?

Helena encountered a few challenges early in her career, particularly when clients underestimated her due to her age and gender. However, she confronted these biases head-on, proving her capabilities through competence and dedication. Her experiences taught her the value of patience and the importance of building trust with clients.?

“To overcome these challenges, it’s all about patience and building trust with a client. They need to see your level of competency and skills. Believe in yourself.”?

Helena thrives on the diversity and spontaneity of her role, relishing the opportunity to interact with clients and collaborate with colleagues. While no day is the same, Helena’s passion for her work is evident in her commitment to continuous learning and knowledge-sharing.??

“I love the spontaneity of my job; I move around, I’m client facing, and every day is different. I love being able to work so closely with clients, while also collaborating with colleagues at Xeinadin. I am so passionate about that.”?

While outside of work, she is fuelled by the love from her husband, their families and her pets, creating a great work-life balance.?

As Xeinadin extends their celebration of International Women's Day throughout March, Helena emphasises the significance of recognising and empowering women within the organisation. She advocates for gender equality in senior positions and applauds the initiatives of enhanced family-friendly policies and flexible working options, which creates a positive workplace environment for women.??

“Xeinadin is a great learning spot and accountancy is a great career to have, and although things are constantly changing and it may be scary at times, don’t be afraid, take it in your stride and grab every opportunity with both hands. Go for it.”?
