Authentic Coaching: Embarking on a Journey of Discovery

My first introduction to coaching was odd to say the least. In 2021, I participated in an online training course designed to educate coaches within the education sector. The primary objective was to equip me and fellow educators with the skills necessary to train others in coaching methods. At the onset, I hadn't yet learnt or begun to consciously implement coaching techniques myself, a sentiment shared by many in the group.

The task ahead seemed questionable.

About halfway through the session, an activity called for the observation of a coaching conversation, with a volunteer needed to be the recipient of the coaching while others analysed the interaction focusing on the coaches’ responses. Despite the uncomfortable silence that followed, I stepped forward—an occurrence not unfamiliar to me as a theatre teacher.

Helen's Strategic Steps

Shift in Coaching Style. Helen observed a significant shift in her coaching style as she embraced a more fluid and conversational approach. Departing from rigid coaching questions, she fostered transparency about coaching taking place, creating a safe space for open discussions.?

Recognition of Resistance and Patience. Helen recognized that some individuals exhibited resistance to personal growth, emphasizing the importance of patience in the coaching process. She adjusted her approach, creating a supportive environment where individuals could explore their potential at their own pace.

Emphasis on Organizational Culture. Helen shifted her focus toward emphasizing the advantages of coaching in aligning individuals with the organization's vision and mission. She recognized coaching's role in empowering staff with self-reliance and emotional intelligence, contributing to a coaching culture within the organization.
