Introduction

New developments
The NHS Wales Staff Survey 2024 is now live!
We are pleased to launch the second annual NHS Wales staff survey. This confidential survey offers NHS Wales staff the opportunity to shape their workplaces by providing feedback, insight and perspectives on their experiences.
It is also an essential tool to create compassionate cultures and to give NHS Wales organisations a better understanding of how systems, policies and procedures can enhance workplace experiences and positively contribute to the health and wellbeing of the workforce.
The survey closes on 29 November 2024 and we encourage all NHS colleagues to promote this so that we get the best possible response rate.

Retention Hub launched
Retention is key to developing a sustainable workforce. Our All-Wales Retention Programme continues to support organisations in developing local retention plans to improve staff experience at work and to keep them in the workforce.
Investment so far has included the appointment of 10 local retention leads based in Health Boards and Trusts across Wales.
These posts provide capacity and momentum to develop and accelerate a diverse range of retention activities that respond to local needs and circumstances.
To support this, we have launched a retention hub which anyone can access. The Belong, Thrive, Stay Hub provides access to a range of toolkits, resources, quality improvement guides, case studies and data dashboards.
It also serves as a platform to share good practice and successful initiatives.
Launch of Musculoskeletal Capability Framework for Wales
Developing the workforce for primary care is one of our top priorities. With musculoskeletal (MSK) professionals from across Wales, we have developed a multiprofessional MSK capability framework . This defines the capabilities required by professionally registered clinicians to meet the current and predicted health and wellbeing needs of people with MSK conditions in primary care settings. It will ensure consistency in the development of the MSK workforce, and the quality of care and services as set out in the Quality Statement for MSK Health (2023) .
Further information can be found on our webpage .
Education and training
New Education Provision
We constantly strive to ensure the education and training we commission is of the highest quality, and that it meets the needs of students, trainees and patients.
As part of this work, we will shortly be awarding contracts to provide Ultrasound Education at Post Graduate Certificate and Post Graduate Diploma Level 7. We will also be awarding the contract for Level 6 Independent Authorisation of Blood Transfusion Education. Additionally, we are currently out to tender for Independent Prescribing Education at levels 6 and 7.

Green light for Genomics Strategic Workforce Plan
We are delighted to announce that the Genomics Strategic Workforce Plan was approved at our September Board. It will be launched on Friday 15 November during Genomics Literacy Week.
Developed with Genomics Partnership Wales, the Plan sets out a three-year roadmap to build the foundations for a sustainable workforce to keep pace with advances in genomics. The plan includes actions for the development of the specialist genomics workforce as well as support for the wider workforce given the implications of genomics across so many pathways of care.

HEIW AGM: annual report, annual quality report and highlights video
It was great to welcome so many stakeholders and partners to our virtual AGM.
Here the HEIW Board approved our Annual Report 2023-2024 . This underlines our progress in: increasing the number of colleagues in training; supporting retention at a local level; developing and launching key workforce plans; and supporting workforce solutions for national programmes including planned care, diagnostics and cancer. Staff talked about their most significant moments in the HEIW AGM highlight video .
The Board also approved our first annual quality report . This reflects how quality is at the heart of everything we do and explains the solid foundations we have built to apply the duty of quality.
More Than Just Words Annual Report 2023-24
Following Board approval, we have submitted our More Than Just Words annual report to Welsh Government. This highlights how we are progressing actions to support the delivery of healthcare services in Welsh, including:
? Commissioning and rolling out a Raising Welsh Language Confidence course for senior NHS staff across Wales – Agor y Drws (Opening the Door).
? Developing a workforce planning document to support Welsh language services. This includes support for Standard 110 of the Welsh Language Health Standards to offer clinical consultations in Welsh.
? Developing an internal process for agreeing, qualifying and standardising health terminology. We are beginning to work with other partners to share best practice.
