Height Charts
Mark Greenhalgh
People tell me I take their breath away and make them cry happy tears - hey someone's got to do it. Self employed owner of theOakman a specialised technology based woodworking business.
We have posted some photos on facebook yesterday of the height charts we were commissioned to make by a couple of friends from choir who wanted them as family presents for their children who have recently had their own children so their grandchildren.
I was originally asked by my wife to make one for her elder daughter’s first child’s christening but didn’t get them to a satisfactory production quality level until this Christmas - so two years late.
I looked what others were offering and decided what were the key things that would make a design stand out and what additional features a cnc machine could offer.
I thought in the UK people needed both imperial and metric measurements as the older generation still think in feet and inches and the younger ones work in centimetres as a general rule - I also felt having a sliding measure up the middle would be something that could set our design apart.
It took a while to develop - it required some cnc techniques we had to master such as tiling and t slots neither of which are easy - Lesley my wife also thinks the red knobs on the slider just add the cream on top.
I wanted it to be made from one piece of re/upcycled oak - there aren’t many things that have been made from oak planks 1650/1800 x 160/180 - I managed to make 5 from an old desk that one of my suppliers rang me about - I am still struggling to find a reliable source to be able to make these at will but hope to identify something that will allow me to make these for more local people to delight their families.
I am really pleased with the way they have been received by the people getting them - they have been absolutely delighted with what we have come up with - I have to say myself they do look fantastic and make a super family present.
They’re not cheap but I think you are paying for what you get.
