Hedonic and Eudaimonic Happiness

Hedonic and Eudaimonic Happiness

Happiness in the workplace is not only critical for individual well-being but also for creating a more productive and successful organization. However, it is essential to understand that happiness is not a one-size-fits-all concept.?Hedonic and eudaimonic happiness?are two types of happiness that can impact how we perceive and experience work. Moreover, we must consider the diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) aspect when promoting happiness in the workplace.

Hedonic happiness?is the pleasure and enjoyment that comes from positive experiences, such as receiving a bonus or having a comfortable workspace. While hedonic happiness is important, it can be short-lived and may not contribute to long-term job satisfaction. In contrast,?eudaimonic happiness?is a deeper sense of purpose and fulfilment that comes from engaging in meaningful work, personal growth, and contributing to the collective good.

DEI considerations?come into play when promoting both types of happiness in the workplace. One of the most critical considerations is ensuring that all employees have equal opportunities to experience happiness at work. It is essential to acknowledge and address any biases, discrimination, or systemic barriers that may prevent certain individuals or groups from accessing the same opportunities for growth, recognition, and autonomy.

For example, providing training and development programs may be accessible to some employees but may not be available to others due to their demographic characteristics or status within the organization. Addressing these issues requires a DEI-focused approach that aims to create a more inclusive and equitable workplace culture.

Moreover, promoting?eudaimonic happiness?requires organizations to recognize and value diverse perspectives and experiences. By doing so, employees can feel that their contributions are valued and that they are making a meaningful impact in the workplace. This can lead to greater job satisfaction, engagement, and retention rates.

Lastly, promoting?hedonic happiness?must also be done inclusively. It is essential to recognize that what makes one person happy may not be the same for another. For example, offering a beer fridge in the office may be a perk for some employees but may make others feel excluded or uncomfortable. Therefore, it is critical to ensure that any perks or benefits are inclusive and accessible to all employees.

Promoting happiness in the workplace requires an understanding of the different types of happiness and a DEI-focused approach.

By creating a more inclusive and equitable work environment, organizations can foster a sense of purpose and fulfilment in their employees, leading to a happier and more productive workforce.
