How the Right to Disconnect is shaping Work-Life Balance for Accountants
Recently, our Director, Steve Merritt, conducted a LinkedIn poll to explore how the Right to Disconnect law might impact accountants' work-life balance. The results revealed a divided opinion.
A notable 56% of respondents felt the law wouldn’t positively impact the industry, concerned that the pressure to stay connected after hours, due to tight deadlines and client demands, would continue. Despite the legal right to disconnect, many believe that employees might still feel compelled to respond outside of work hours to protect their career growth and client relationships.
Conversely, 41% of respondents were more optimistic, seeing the law as a step toward setting clear boundaries and reducing burnout. They view it as an opportunity to improve personal time management in a high-pressure profession like accounting.
This poll raises the question: can the law truly bring about a shift, or is a broader change in workplace culture required to support better work-life balance??
We'd love to hear your thoughts—will this law make a difference for accountants, or is there more to be done?
Top Tip from our Director, Steve Merritt ????
The ONE resume section you’re probably overlooking (but shouldn’t be).
The average employer scans your resume in 7 seconds, so it's important to make your resume concise.
Candidates often ask me, should I include hobbies and interests?
I say yes, providing they make an impact on the role you are applying for.
Used correctly, hobbies and interests in a resume are an excellent way to draw attention to relevant, transferable skills.
Many hobbies offer an insight into your skills that may not be evident based on your qualifications and previous work experiences.
E.g. Team sports, coaching, volunteering, or tech hobbies.
Employers are searching for candidates who can add value to their culture and contribute to excellent team dynamics.
Remember, it's important to be authentic (don't make it up), concise, and ensure your resume stays focused on your professional experience.

The team share some interesting recent stories that shed some light on the realities of what they experience as recruiters ??
? My CEO lied to me!
I thought I had found the perfect opportunity—a role as a Finance Leader in a company I admired. The brand was strong, and the career boost would have been significant.
I was thrilled when I got the offer. But there was a catch: the salary was lower than what I was earning. My CEO assured me it was the best they could do, and I trusted him.
So, I accepted the role.
But as soon as I started, I realised that I was the lowest-paid manager on the senior leadership team. There was indeed room for negotiation. I was disappointed.
I told myself I would prove my worth and make up for it in my first review.
That didn’t happen.
Here’s what I learned and what I now tell my candidates:
? Know your worth, be confident in what you bring to the table and don’t shy away from negotiating the salary you deserve ?
P.S. Have you ever accepted less because you wanted the position?
