Tribeca’s Liu exits to start own hedge fund

Jun Bei Liu, the manager of one of Australia’s top-performing hedge funds, is leaving Tribeca Investment Partners after nearly two decades to start her own investment firm, according to a Bloomberg report. Based in Sydney, Liu plans to launch her new firm by early 2025, bringing along the AUD1.5 billion ($1 billion) long-short strategy she currently manages at Tribeca. Although the new firm remains unnamed, Tribeca will continue to provide administrative support.

Liu has been with Tribeca since 2005, starting as an analyst and becoming the lead portfolio manager for the Alpha Plus Fund. Since taking over in 2019, she has significantly grown the fund's assets, quadrupling its size. The fund has averaged a 13% annual return over the past decade, making it Australia’s second-best performing hedge fund, according to Zenith Investment Partners.

Citadel Quant Joins OpenAI

Eugene Tang, a former quantitative researcher at Citadel, has made a career shift by joining OpenAI as a "member of technical staff," according to a report by eFinancial Careers.

Tang recently spent two and a half years at Citadel, focusing on futures and foreign exchange (FX). Prior to that, he began his career at Two Sigma, where he led a team specializing in natural language processing (NLP). During a non-compete period after leaving Two Sigma, Tang worked on side projects, such as developing an image-to-text model for the New Yorker’s cartoon caption contest and participating in a Kaggle tournament.

Activist Gatemore appoints Director of Business Development

Gatemore Capital Management has appointed Casey Herren as its new Director of Business Development. according to Hedgeweek. In this role, Herren will lead partner relations, capital formation efforts, and support the firm’s equities strategy, which focuses on turnaround, recovery, and growth opportunities in UK and US public markets.

With over 20 years of experience advising clients on alternative investments such as private equity, venture capital, and hedge funds, Herren also leads fundraising and marketing for GVP Climate, a Gatemore affiliate specializing in early-stage clean technology investments.

Before joining Gatemore, Herren held similar roles at Lazard, Atlantic Investment Management, and several Texas-based firms, including Caymus Capital Partners, Highland Capital, and Sourcerock
