"He'd Be So Pissed If We Stopped": A Mission-Driven Startup Mourns its Fallen Founder, and Moves On

This special episode of The Dejargonizer Podcast is dedicated to the memory of Adam Bismuth, the visionary founder and late CEO of SightBit --an AI-powered anti-drowning startup on a mission to save lives by "bringing Baywatch into the 21st century."

Adam was killed in battle in Gaza on January 22, 2024 while serving as an advanced master sergeant in the reserves. He was just 35 years old.

After witnessing a preventable drowning death, Adam founded SightBit to use computer vision technology to provide lifeguards with real-time drowning alerts. With an estimated 327,000 people drowning in open water each year according to the World Health Organization (WHO), Adam saw a critical need for innovative solutions to help lifeguards detect struggling swimmers before it's too late.

His sudden passing left the tight-knit team at SightBit reeling, but more determined than ever to fulfill Adam's mission and save lives.

I sit down with SightBit's CTO Itamar Gur and CBO Maayan Padan to discuss:

- Adam's inspiration for starting SightBit and his endless energy for the cause

- How SightBit's drowning detection technology works and where it's being deployed

- The heartbreaking moment they learned of Adam's death and its impact on the team

- Why shutting down the company was never an option despite the enormous loss

- What's next for SightBit as they seek to honor Adam's memory and build the world's best open water anti-drowning company.

I found this an emotional and thought-provoking conversation about leadership, resilience, deep technology, and staying true to your startup's core mission in the face of unimaginable adversity. There’s also a fair amount of de-jargonization of complex tech ??
