Heaven on earth, is it?

If there is a heaven on earth, it is here, it is here in Jammu & Kashmir.

But till when?

If you step away from the political scenario in the region, maybe you will feel concerned about this heaven on earth. Today, Jammu & Kashmir is facing several environmental problems which take a backseat in its political scenario.

A major tourist attraction point which is Dal lake has been a point of concern from several years. It has shrunk about 40% in the last 40 years.

A study done by Srinagar directorate of environmental ecology and remote sensing (SDEERS) reveals a comparison from 1971. In 1971 the size of the Dal lake was around 2547 hectare, whereas in 2008 it has reduced to 1620 hectare.

Another major tourist attraction point which is wular lake also the largest freshwater lake in Asia has been a point of concern due to its incapability to hold water. It's been said, Now it holds 50% less water as compared the to late sixties.

Apart from shrinking water bodies, land conversions are erupting rapidly where people are converting farmlands to non-agricultural land. As a result, the state is facing a huge food grain deficit. A study shows a 32% food grain deficit in 1950-51 as compared to 81.5% food grain deficit in 2016-17.

Isn’t it just time that politicians start addressing these factor as well?
