HEAT

I watched HEAT yesterday as part of the American Essentials Film Festival.....

How do I ever say the right or enough words to ever do this film justice.  This is one of the greatest films that was ever made.  It is exactly my thematic and it sings to my heart every time I see it.  Every time I see and feel something different - something new not felt before.  With only one fault...it was a little too long, but the films of the mid 90s did tend to be a little long.

A couple of weeks ago I posted a few lines about perfect moments in perfect films. The coffee shop scene where Pacino and De Niro go head to head, line for line, moment for moment both against and with each other is mouth dropping astounding.  I got goosebumps again watching it.  They are 2 of the greatest actors to have ever graced our screens and it is the scene that reminds me that I must continually remain humble in this business….

This film in its totality shows that no matter how far we have come along in  filmmaking, we need to take a step back and look at HEAT to see how it’s really done.  This film has the right mix of pause and momentum. He knew when to speed it up and he knew when to slow it down. It has the best shoot em up scene, best heist scene (OK Point Break will always have that) and some of the greatest moments between people who, if had made different choices would have had different lives and perhaps been happy….or not?

HEAT speaks volumes. It is art, it is entertaining, it was commercially successful, it is mesmerising, it is unforgettable and it is new...every time we watch we see something different.

Michael Mann….thank you.
