Heat Pump Knowledge Gaps

Heat Pump Knowledge Gaps

Heat pumps are still very new to the UK market. Yes, the technology has been around for years and yes, there are a number of businesses and heating engineers that have been designing and installing them for a decade or two. But they are not mass market, they still occupy a niche sector - we all know they need to become mainstream and the whole industry and supply chain are adapting at speed.

Heating engineers and installers are considered the trusted experts that most homeowners will take advice from when considering anything to do with their heating system. A lot of focus is given to upskill heating installers on heat pumps and rightly so, that needs to continue. It’s great to see continued support from the UK Government and others to provide funding so installers can access these courses for free. But what about everyone else......? And does everyone else really need to take 3 days and more out to begin t upskill...short answer is no.

We have a huge merchant network, thousands of people. You have specifiers, compliance managers, maintenance and contract managers, procurement, new build housing developers - the list goes on.... Then of course we have end users - you and me. What do we want, it’s something we use every-single day and probably the most hard-working appliance in our home. How will we inform ourselves what a heat pump is and does? And back to installers, many are curious but still very busy with boiler work. How can they find information more readily without doing a load of study and taking time out of work?

So that's what we saw as a problem currently. Let me be clear, I know there is a lot of information out there, including some great training courses, books, pod casts and so on. However, many of these come with limitations and / or a cost which can be significant. - and often you have to hunt around for various bits of the puzzle. At Ideal Heating and Groupe Atlantic Expert Academy HQ today we launch something which we believe is a great first step to help make training content free to access, easy to consume and inform people in a balanced manner. We are proud to have the BPEC charity collaborate on this with us.

Jonathan Ward who is our lead presenter has done an amazing job with the content. Joe Sargieson and his team have been brilliant with graphics and video production. Nicola Smith has provided us some amazing creative flair to provide an identity, brand and support with PR. Cant thank you all enough for some great work.

The content is 100% free to access for anyone, we strongly encourage any organisation to make it available for their employees - we will even provide the content if you want to host it in your own learning system. We want every college, training centre, anyone to be able to access.

Its Series 1 in a number of releases that will become available during 2024 & 25. Please have a look and make best use of it. The next series we will simplify the basics around F-Gas regulations, training and what it involves for heating engineers thinking about upskilling.

Keen to hear how you get on with the content. Thank you for reading :)

Great stuff Andrew Johnson - really important to see more free accessible training on heat pumps getting out there. I think together the industry can quickly close the knowledge gaps with this kind of initiative.

I’ve just gone through the first 3 modules and have to say it’s been done really well indeed. Nice graphics and explained very well by Jonathan Ward. Hat off to all involved in making this. ????

So chuffed for you to finally be able to announce this Andrew Johnson it is obvious the time, effort and expertise that has went into this, it has paid off big time. Just as impressive is your willingness to share for that bigger picture we have discussed. #grabbingadrinkandquietcorner
