Heat pump FAQ's

Things are heating up in the world of air source heat pumps. Since the government announced the Green Homes Grant scheme this summer, heat pumps have been a hot topic. We've seen a large increase in enquiries which all come with a long list of questions.

So, what are Joe Public asking? What do they need to know?

Can I use the GHG voucher for a heat pump install?

Yes you can. Full details haven't been announced but we do know that heat pumps are in the primary list. We also know that there will be a criteria to fit, however a good proportion of those enquiries will be able to benefit from the voucher to replace their heating system.

Will I still be able to receive RHI?

Again, we are still waiting for the full details but currently its looking positive that you'll be able to benefit from both the grant and RHI payments. I suspect the upfront voucher cost will be deducted from the total RHI amount but we should know more in the next couple of weeks.

Will I need new radiators?

Possibly, depending on your current boiler, you may need to make a few changes to your radiators. When a survey and heat loss is completed, any recommendations are listed and we can provide guidance and advice on what works best for your property.

Are heat pumps noisy?

We have a Mitsubishi Ultra Quiet Ecodan in our home and I can honestly say I have no idea when its running! I've done a couple of comparisons and I can say its quieter than our kettle boiling and the sparrows nesting in our eaves!

I'm worried it won't be as warm as our gas boiler.

Heat pumps work slightly differently to gas boilers in that they work at lower temperatures. A first glance you may think this will mean your home won't be as warm and you'll need to be constantly turning the thermostat up to reach the desired cosiness. Our home has never been consistently warm like it is now. I never have to worry about those chilly mornings or those evenings you might need a blanket!

I am strongly in favour of this initiative and hope that this will raise awareness for the need to move forward with new heating technology!
