Louisiana’s surgical castration law

The NYT: Louisiana is set to become the first state to allow judges to order surgical castration for child sex offenders.

Newsweek has some background: Louisiana already allowed chemical castration -- along with a number of states.

A law professor in Olean Times says the bill is both cruel and undermines state's moral authority.

Also, says Law and Crime, it's not clear that castrating sex offenders will actually curb sex crimes.

Heat dome in the west

A “heat dome” is a weather phenomenon where high pressure traps and heats air, leading to soaring temps. BBC says it's putting 34M in the US West at risk with triple-digit heat.

Yahoo explains some of the science: Heat dome traps hot ocean air, causing prolonged high temps.

CBS notes that the dome also hikes up fire danger.

NYT: California's heat dome will be a “shock to the system” with triple-digit temps.

The National Weather Service issued a warning and tips for staying cool.

Is this also why we had record high Atlantic ocean temps as well or is that unrelated?
