The Heartwarming Impact of Pet Therapy at Connecticut Children’s: Emily and Luna’s Story

At Connecticut Children’s, where every decision is made with the well-being of kids and families in mind, the impact of individual contributions is profound. Emily’s journey with her beloved dog, Luna, is a testament to this.

In July, Emily and Luna became a Pet Therapy Team at Connecticut Children’s. Emily, who joined the Instructional Systems Designer team in June, was thrilled to be part of a group that prioritizes the needs of children and their families. Her role as an Epic trainer allows her to see firsthand how the tools and resources she teaches are used to care for patients. But it is her volunteer work with Luna that truly brings her joy.

I feel grateful that we can provide joy and comfort to kids, families and staff members. I feel humbled that we get to be a tiny positive impact in these patients lives. I feel hopeful that we will maybe spark patient dreams of becoming a handler with their own furry friends one day or help out their community in another way. I was a teacher in my first career, and I love being able to still connect with children with my best friend, Luna. - Emily Moreau

Luna, a two-and-a-half-year-old dog with a sweet and calming demeanor, loves spending time with the kids at the hospital. Emily wanted to support the organization she works for in a more personal way, and volunteering with Luna provided the perfect opportunity. Together, they bring joy and comfort to patients, families, and staff members. Emily feels humbled to be a small positive influence in the lives of these children and hopeful that their visits might inspire some patients to become handlers with their own furry friends one day.

One of Luna’s favorite activities is doing ‘bed visits,’ where she lays her head near or on a patient. The children often express their love for Luna, asking if she can stay in their room or if they can take her home. These moments of connection are incredibly rewarding for Emily, who was a teacher in her first career and loves being able to connect with children through Luna.

Outside of her therapy work, Luna enjoys off-leash hiking, where she can run freely and play in the mud and water. Her favorite treat is cheese-cheese, please! She eagerly looks forward to after a day of bringing smiles to the faces of young patients.

Emily’s story is a beautiful example of how one person’s dedication and love for their pet can make a significant difference in the lives of others. At Connecticut Children’s, the impact of such individual contributions is felt deeply, creating a nurturing and supportive environment for all.
