A Heartfelt Teachers' Day Gift from NCC Students: A Moment to Cherish
Lt. P. LEON DHARMADURAI
Assistant Professor / Automobile Engineering & Associate NCC Officer at SNS College of Technology
As an educator, Teachers' Day holds a special place in our hearts—a day dedicated to acknowledging the bond between teachers and students, and the transformative power of education. This year, however, Teachers' Day became particularly memorable for me, thanks to the heartfelt and unexpected gesture from my NCC (National Cadet Corps) students. Their thoughtful gift was not just a token of appreciation, but a reflection of the respect and connection that has grown between us over the years.
On the Evening of Teachers' Day, I entered my office to find a beautifully arranged presentation from my NCC students. The gift was both a surprise and an overwhelming expression of their gratitude and respect. It wasn’t just about the material object but the effort and thought behind it.
As a teacher involved in the NCC, my role extends beyond the traditional classroom setting. I have had the privilege of guiding and mentoring students not only in their academic pursuits but also in leadership, discipline, and service to the nation. The NCC is more than an extracurricular activity; it is a program that instills values of patriotism, resilience, and teamwork. Over the years, I have watched these young cadets evolve into confident, responsible, and motivated individuals, ready to take on challenges both in their personal lives and for the country.
The gift was a reflection of the deeper connection that has developed through these interactions. It symbolized the mutual respect we have cultivated—me as their guide and mentor, and them as enthusiastic learners and future leaders. Their gesture reminded me of how powerful and rewarding the teaching profession can be when it goes beyond the classroom and enters the realm of personal development.

Receiving such a thoughtful gift made me reflect on the essence of teaching. It is not just about imparting knowledge; it is about inspiring, motivating, and supporting students as they navigate their journey of growth. Over the years, my interactions with NCC students have reinforced this belief. I have learned as much from them as they have from me. Their dedication, discipline, and willingness to serve have inspired me to continually evolve as a teacher and a mentor.
Teaching is often seen as a one-way street, where the teacher imparts wisdom to students. But in truth, it is a reciprocal relationship. The students teach us patience, resilience, and adaptability, and they remind us of the impact we can have on their lives. The thoughtful Teachers' Day gift from my NCC students was a powerful reminder of this dynamic. It was a testament to the mutual respect, learning, and growth that define a successful teacher-student relationship.
Gratitude for being in a profession that allows me to make a difference in the lives of young people, and gratitude for the students who have made my teaching journey so fulfilling. Their gift was not just an expression of appreciation—it was a reminder of the joy, responsibility, and privilege that comes with being an educator.
This Teachers' Day, I felt truly honored, not because of the physical gift, but because of the relationships I have built with my students. The NCC students’ gesture will remain one of my most cherished memories, reminding me that the impact of teaching extends far beyond textbooks and exams. It is about shaping lives, building character, and leaving a lasting impression that goes both ways. As I continue my journey as a teacher, this experience will inspire me to give my best, knowing that the connections we forge today will last a lifetime.
