A Heartfelt Journey of Roots and Peaks : From Memories to Mountains

Last month, I embarked on a journey that was as much about rediscovery as it was about creating new memories with my family. The trip took me back to my birthplace, Asansol, after two decades, and then onward to the breathtaking landscapes of Sikkim. This wasn’t just a vacation—it was a walk down memory lane and a leap into the natural grandeur of the Himalayas.

Back to Where It All Began: Asansol

Returning to Asansol was a deeply emotional experience. After 20 long years, the streets, the air, and the familiar faces brought back a flood of memories. Sharing this part of my life with my wife and my son, who were seeing this place for the first time, made it even more special.

Meeting friends and family who have always been close to my heart was like reconnecting with a part of my soul. Their warmth and hospitality made me feel as though time had stood still, even as the grey hairs and growing tummies humorously hinted at the passage of time. These are the people who have been pillars of support and joy in my life’s journey and seeing them again after so many years felt like coming home. Sharing laughter, stories, and memories with them reinforced the deep bonds we share—bonds that time and distance can never diminish.

Walking through the Railway quarters where I grew up was both nostalgic and bittersweet. Once a lively place full of laughter and camaraderie, it now seemed to be in ruins. The playgrounds where I spent countless hours with my friends, running and laughing without a care in the world, were now eerily quiet. Yet, standing there, I could vividly relive those carefree days in a flash.

One of the most poignant moments of our visit to Asansol was attending Chhath Puja with Bihari Aunty and her family, an experience made even more special as it marked her final Puja after over 50 years of unwavering devotion. Witnessing her perform the rituals one last time was deeply moving, and having Rashmi and Shreeram offer arag (prayers to the sun) for the first time in their lives added a deeply personal and emotional touch.

I missed my parents deeply during this visit. Their absence was a poignant reminder of the passage of time, but their presence in my heart remains my greatest strength. My parents’ values, their stories, and their relationships with their friends (whom I still lovingly call aunts and uncles) continue to inspire me. They built a life full of love and happiness, spreading joy wherever they went. Hearing stories about their kindness and the bonds they forged reminds me of the foundation they laid for me—a foundation built on integrity, compassion, and resilience.

A Himalayan Escape: Sikkim

From the familiar embrace of Asansol, we journeyed to the pristine beauty of Sikkim. Known for its snow-clad peaks and serene landscapes, Sikkim didn’t just meet but exceeded our expectations. Each day was an adventure, and each place had its own charm.

Gangtok, the capital of Sikkim, was our first stop. The city welcomed us with its superb climate—a crisp chill in the air that hinted at the snow-covered peaks waiting for us further north. One of our highlights was the snowfall we encountered during our journey to higher altitudes. Watching the flakes gently fall and cover the landscape in a pristine white blanket was nothing short of magical, especially for Shreeram, who was seeing snow for the first time.

We visited some iconic spots in Gangtok:

  • MG Marg: The vibrant heart of Gangtok, this pedestrian-only street buzzes with energy. Lined with cafes, shops, and restaurants, it was perfect for an evening stroll and sampling local delicacies.
  • Tsomgo Lake: A serene glacial lake surrounded by rugged mountain terrain; it left us spellbound. The still, turquoise waters reflect the snow-covered peaks around it, creating a breathtaking panorama. One of the most memorable moments here was the yak ride.
  • Nathula Pass: Located on the Indo-China border, the pass was a highlight of our trip. The sheer majesty of the mountains, coupled with the sub-zero temperatures and the patriotism evoked by the presence of our soldiers made it a memorable experience. As we stood at the pass, the biting cold only amplified our admiration for the soldiers who endure such extreme conditions to guard the nation.
  • Baba Harbhajan Singh Memorial: Dedicated to the legendary soldier, this unique shrine stands as a testament to his devotion and is revered by locals and visitors alike. The stories surrounding him added a mystical touch to our journey.
  • Monasteries: A spiritual oasis introduced us to the rich Buddhist traditions of the region. Its serene ambiance was a welcome escape from the hustle of daily life.

  • Buddha Park (Tathagata Tsal): Located in Ravangla, this tranquil park is home to a towering statue of Lord Buddha. The serene surroundings and panoramic views of the Himalayas made it a peaceful retreat.
  • Char Dham (Siddheshwar Dham): Situated in Namchi, this spiritual site replicates the four Dhams of India. Its architectural beauty and spiritual significance made it a must-visit spot.

While Sikkim’s natural beauty was enchanting, the roads, especially those leading to higher altitudes, left much to be desired. The uneven and often treacherous pathways added an element of adventure to our journey. Despite the challenges, the breathtaking views and the warmth of the local people made the journey rewarding.

A Snowy Wonderland

The highlight for us was experiencing snowfall for the first time during our visit to Tsomgo Lake and Nathula Pass. Watching snowflakes gently fall and transform the landscape into a white paradise was magical, especially for my son Shreeram, who was overjoyed by the sight.

Sikkim left us with memories of snow-covered peaks, spiritual tranquillity, and heartfelt connections with nature. Despite the rough roads, the superb climate, and the kindness of its people made it a destination we will cherish forever.

Bridging Generations and Reliving Memories

This trip wasn’t just about revisiting old places or exploring new ones; it was about reliving cherished memories and building new ones with my family. Showing Rashmi and Shreeram the places that shaped my childhood and experiencing the magic of Sikkim together made this journey unforgettable.

As we returned, the scenic beauty of Sikkim and the memories of Asansol intertwined in my mind. My childhood home, my friends, and the values my parents instilled in me stood as testaments to the person I’ve become. Meanwhile, the mountains of Sikkim reminded me of resilience, and its people of simplicity and kindness.

Despite the bumpy roads and the challenges, they brought, the journey was a reminder of life’s balance—the highs and lows that shape our experiences. Sikkim’s natural beauty, its climate, and the warmth of its people left an indelible mark on all of us. As we returned, I carried with me not just photographs, but a heart full of gratitude for the memories made and the bonds strengthened during this special trip.
