In the heart of Africa, Sudan stands as a land rich in history and culture. But today, it is also a land of profound suffering and displacement. The current situation in Sudan is nothing short of a humanitarian catastrophe, with millions of lives hanging in the balance.
Since mid-April 2023, the crisis in Sudan has escalated to unprecedented levels, forcing an estimated 7.3 million people to flee their homes. This number includes those who have faced secondary displacement, moving from one place to another in desperate attempts to find safety. As a result, Sudan now harbors the largest internally displaced population in the world, with over 11 million people uprooted from their homes.
The sheer scale of this crisis is staggering. Imagine entire communities, families, and individuals stripped of their homes, their livelihoods, and their sense of security. Picture children growing up in makeshift shelters, unsure of where their next meal will come from or whether they will ever return to their old lives. These are the harsh realities faced by millions in Sudan.
For many, displacement is not a new experience. It is a recurring nightmare, as conflict and violence force them to move repeatedly, never allowing them to settle or rebuild. The toll on their physical and mental health is immeasurable.
Among the displaced are vulnerable groups such as women, children, and the elderly. They are particularly at risk, facing threats of violence, exploitation, and severe deprivation. The healthcare system is overwhelmed, and access to basic necessities like food, clean water, and sanitation is severely limited. The international community must act swiftly and decisively to address these urgent needs.
Humanitarian organizations on the ground are working tirelessly to provide relief. The United Nations and various NGOs are delivering essential services, here's how WFP has been helping:
Emergency Response: WFP has delivered life-saving food and nutrition assistance to over 6.5 million people in 17 of Sudan’s 18 states.
Resilience: WFP manages activities designed to improve livelihoods and build resilience, focused on the relatively safe eastern state of Sudan. WFP has also resumed the African Development Bank-funded Sudan Emergency Wheat Production Project in Northern, River Nile, Gezira, Kassala and White Nile states. The programme aims to increase Sudan’s domestic wheat production, which is vital to preventing hunger from rising even more.
UNHAS: The WFP-managed United Nations Humanitarian Air Services has established air connections between Nairobi and Port Sudan and Amman and Port Sudan, which are already transporting frontline humanitarians from 69 organizations. In 2023, UNHAS facilitated nearly 200 international flights into and out of Port Sudan, transporting around 4,000 passengers and 18.2 MT of light humanitarian cargo from May to December 2023.
Logistics: The WFP-led Logistics Cluster provides storage services to 9 UN agencies and NGO partners at four locations in Port Sudan, Wad Madani, Kosti, and Gedaref. Thousands of tons of humanitarian supplies are passing through these hubs.

ETC: The Emergency Telecommunications Cluster provides connectivity services in Port Sudan, Kassala and Kosti. In Port Sudan, the Cluster is providing connectivity to around 600 users from 37 partners across 28 sites. In Kassala, the Cluster provides connectivity to 70 users from 8 partners across 4 sites.
The people of Sudan are not just numbers or statistics; they are mothers, fathers, children, and elders with hopes, dreams, and stories. Their resilience in the face of unimaginable hardship is both heartbreaking and inspiring. We must amplify their voices and shine a light on their plight.
As we reflect on the dire situation in Sudan, let us remember our shared humanity. Let us recognize the strength and courage of those who continue to fight for survival amid chaos. And let us commit to doing everything in our power to support them, to advocate for peace, and to work towards a future where no one has to endure such suffering.
In times of crisis, the world must come together to offer compassion, aid, and hope. The people of Sudan deserve no less. Let us stand with them, today and always.
