Heartbreak Meets Tech: How AI Is Revolutionizing Divorce
Ever wonder what artificial intelligence is going to do to your industry?
On a whim, I entered the following prompt into ChatGPT, just to see what it would say.
Me to ChatGPT: I want a divorce. What do I do?
ChatGPT: "I'm sorry to hear that you're going through this. Here are some general steps to consider when seeking a divorce:
1.???? Evaluate Your Decision: Ensure that this is truly what you want. Consider counseling or therapy if you're unsure.
2.???? Gather Information: Educate yourself on the divorce laws in your state or country. This includes grounds for divorce, the divorce process, and your rights regarding property, finances, and children.
3.???? Organize Documents: Collect important documents such as financial records, property deeds, bank statements, and any other relevant paperwork.
4.???? Consult a Lawyer: Find a family law attorney who can provide legal advice and represent you in the divorce proceedings. They can help you understand your rights and obligations.
5.???? Consider Mediation: Mediation can be a less adversarial way to settle disputes regarding property, finances, and child custody.
6.???? File for Divorce: Your attorney will help you file the necessary paperwork with the court to initiate the divorce process.
7.???? Temporary Arrangements: Address temporary living arrangements, child custody, and support during the divorce process.
8.???? Negotiate a Settlement: Work with your spouse and lawyers to negotiate the terms of your divorce, including property division, alimony, child support, and custody arrangements.
9.???? Finalize the Divorce: Once an agreement is reached, it will be submitted to the court for approval. After the court approves the agreement, the divorce will be finalized.
10.? Post-Divorce Considerations: Update your will, insurance policies, and other legal documents to reflect your new status.
Remember, each divorce case is unique, so it's important to get professional advice tailored to your specific situation."

While there’s a LOT more to divorce than what’s encapsulated in those ten steps, as a starting point – they’re not bad.
They’re especially not bad when you consider that it took ChatGPT less than 10 seconds to come up with them, based on a very simple prompt.
ChatGPT can also spit out a divorce document checklist, tell you the elements of a good parenting plan, and help you create a negotiation strategy for your divorce. All of those things would take a human hours or days to complete. ChatGPT creates them in seconds.
While none of the information you can gather from ChatGPT can replace a divorce professional (yet!) it WILL provide anyone who’s thinking about or facing a divorce with a great starting point. It WILL provide them with information that would have taken a divorce professional HOURS to convey (at a fairly hefty price tag) in less than a minute … and it will do it FOR FREE.
As someone who’s been a divorce professional for more decades than I care to admit, looking at what AI can do for my clients is both exhilarating and terrifying.
While I don’t think AI will ever completely replace human professionals, I do think it will revolutionize the way people divorce … and probably sooner than anyone thinks.
What can we, as divorce professionals, DO to counter this revolution?
1.???????? Level up customer service. The current divorce system isn’t intuitive or user friendly. AI will change consumer’s access to divorce information. But it can’t provide human support, interaction or wisdom. If we can become our clients’ trusted advisers, we’ll never be replaced by AI.
2. ??????? Use AI to our advantage. Our clients WILL be using AI soon (if they’re not already doing it now.) To stay relevant, we’ve got to use AI to make us more efficient and effective. If we can pass on cost savings to clients, while guiding them through the parts of divorce that AI CAN’T do, we’ll have more clients than we can count.
3.???????? Ramp up the human side of what we do. While divorce professionals can be fountains of information, what makes them irreplaceable is their empathy, emotional intelligence, and practical wisdom. In the past those attributes haven’t been emphasized. Now is the time to do exactly that.
For better or for worse, the AI genie is out of the bottle. It will never go back in. Our challenge is to grab the genie by the hand and fly with it or get left behind.

8 个月AI in all industries is a bit unsettling; but Karen Covy, Divorce Coach, Recovering Lawyer you are absolutely correct that it cannot replace the human factor and provide necessarily the correct guidance in every situation since each situation is unique on its own merit. Hopefully we, as humans, recognize that aspect and don't fall under the guise that AI knows all.
