"Everybody doesn't get everything."

That's the quote from the book I read by Ariel Levy, "The Rules Do Not Apply: A Memoir."

Ariel received the National Magazine Award for Essays and Criticism in 2014 and is a staff member at The New Yorker.

In her early 30's, she wrote a profile of Maureen Dowd, the sole female columnist at The New York Times at the time, and the second female White House correspondent in the paper's history.

At 53, Dowd won the Pulitzer Prize and, according to Ariel, "looked amazing, and lived alone."

"I remember sitting in the insanely decorated living room of her brownstone in Georgetown —?the walls were blood red, the bookshelves were crowded with feathered fans, old Nancy Sinatra record jackets, a collection of bubbling motion lamps, another of mermaids, a dozen vintage martini shakers, all kinds of toy tigers —?and being intoxicated by her peculiarity, independence, and success."

"I asked if she'd ever wanted children. She told me, 'Everybody doesn't get everything.'"

"It sounded depressing to me at the time, a statement of defeat. Now admitting it seems like the obvious and essential work of growing up. Everybody doesn't get everything: as natural and unavoidable as mortality."

My therapist has told me that where I am now in my life, at my age, I'm facing that reality.

Of understanding certain doors have closed.

And others won't open.

I think our culture promotes too much pressure.

To live a life of doing #allthethings.

How many of us feel fulfilled aiming for that? I see stress everywhere. I experience it myself. But reckoning with this truth is the art of growing up.

Everybody doesn't get everything. And that's okay.

Are you growing up along with me?

Have a beautiful week ahead,

Judy

Imposter Syndrome: Asian American Edition with Jule Kim, PCC

Have you ever felt like an imposter in your own life? I know I have.

Jule Kim sheds light on the reality of imposter syndrome in my latest podcast episode. We explore how the relentless pursuit of external validation can eclipse our internal compass.

It's crucial to understand the 'why' behind your boundaries. Jule and I discuss the importance of setting them, not as barriers to others, but as bridges to our own needs and desires.

SHAME —?the #1 emotion Asian Americans experience. Overcoming the guilt associated with self-care can be tough, but it's a vital step toward personal fulfillment.

Tune in to hear our thoughts on finding genuine fulfillment.

And, growing up.

Like Maureen Dowd talked about.

I think one of the hardest and most liberating lessons is this one, and that that's ok.

It's one of those things life does to nudge us to our most fulfilling place. I'm grateful that I haven't gotten everything I wanted -sometimes desperately wanted! - when I wanted it. Eventually I started to see way better things coming my way than the things I had my heart set on.
