Today, we will explore workplace engagement through a fresh perspective. Rather than focusing solely on individual efforts within an organization, let's embrace a more collaborative and communal approach. It's about cultivating a culture where teams are fully committed, mentally in the zone, and ready to make a positive impact.

By now, we are all aware of the substantial cost of disengagement. Low engagement widens communication gaps and leads to role ambiguity, missed deadlines, and dampened motivation. According to Gallup 's State of the Global Workplace: 2023 Report, disengaged employees collectively result in an $8.8 trillion loss in productivity, equivalent to 9% of the global GDP.

However, there is a more compelling narrative we can focus on today. Further research conducted by Gallup across 112,312 business units links employee engagement with business success. Teams in the top quartile of engagement reap substantial benefits over their bottom-quartile counterparts: such as a 23% increase in profitability,18% boost in sales productivity, and a 10% uptick in customer loyalty and engagement.

Team engagement mirrors the collective drive, dedication, and enthusiasm of team members toward shared objectives, nurturing collaboration and bolstering overall success. It illustrates the emotional investment, active involvement, and feelings of ownership, belonging, and fulfilment within the team.

To steer our teams towards high engagement levels, we can implement several strategies that directly involve the teams:

  • Clarifying Goals and Roles: Ensuring clarity on goals and roles is important for hybrid teams, where remote members may feel disconnected. Team coaching workshops can help all members understand their contributions, fostering alignment and purpose.
  • Building Trust and Cohesion: Trust is vital for team engagement, especially in hybrid setups with limited face-to-face interaction. Conversations that invite vulnerability and awareness can strengthen bonds and foster a cohesive team environment regardless of physical proximity.
  • Enhancing Communication: Effective communication is challenging in hybrid teams. By focusing on open channels and leveraging technology, teams can bridge the gap between in-person and remote members, enhancing trust, collaboration, and engagement.
  • Empowering Ownership: Empowering team members to take ownership of their work is easier said then done and, as such, we recommend bringing in the experts. Team coaching empowers all members to contribute meaningfully, fostering accountability and engagement across the team.

Keen to hear your success stories about team engagement here in the comments. One personal experience that comes to mind, occurred in a team meeting in the last recission when I was in the sports industry. The team leader shared from such a vulnerable perspective that it opened up the floodgates for a real conversation about where we all were at that day and how we could support each other. Our sense of belonging increased as did our empathy, we are all human and we are all in this moment together.
