The Heart of Rail Projects Lies in Its People.

Always Put People First

Project management is critical to any organization that seeks to achieve its goals and objectives successfully. It involves organizing, planning, and executing projects within the set timelines, budgets, and specifications.

While project management is often seen as a collection of tools, methodologies, and processes, it is crucial to recognize that the heart of project management lies in its people.

As the famous management consultant Peter Drucker said, "Management is doing things right; leadership is doing the right things." A strong, creative, and well-connected team can overcome challenges even the most advanced tools and processes cannot.?

For instance, during a software development project, our team's brainstorming session helped us solve a critical issue and get the project back on track. This example shows how a team's collective effort can lead to successful project outcomes.

Team Resilience

Successful project management requires a solid and efficient team, practical tools and processes, and resilience.

According to the famous American entrepreneur Thomas Edison, "I have not failed. I've just found 10,000 ways that won't work." Resilience is another critical aspect of project management.

Projects often encounter unexpected challenges and obstacles, but the team's spirit and teamwork can help overcome them. During crises like Hurricane Sandy and the COVID-19 pandemic, our project management team at Long Island Rail Road developed and executed equipment contingency plans, maintaining a significant percentage of service reliability rate.

This resilience was not due to processes or tools but rather the tenacity and determination of the team members.

Resilience is another critical aspect of project management. Projects are often fraught with unforeseen challenges and obstacles, and people's spirit and teamwork help navigate these challenges.

Team Connections

Moreover, a project's success hinges on the connections between its team members. Projects thrive on the relationships, communication, and collaboration among their people.?

As the famous businessman Richard Branson said, "A business has to be involving; it has to be fun, and it has to exercise your creative instincts." As a Certified Lean Six Sigma Black Belt, I've learned that fostering a culture of open communication and collaboration can significantly enhance project outcomes.?

While tools and methodologies are essential in project management, people drive a project's success. We can navigate any challenge and deliver outstanding results by fostering innovation, resilience, and connection within our teams.

"People Power"

Team Training

As project managers, we must recognize that our team is the most critical asset in our project's success. So, investing in your team's training and development is essential to enhance their skills and capabilities.?

You can ensure successful project outcomes by investing in your team's training and development, nurturing a culture of open communication and collaboration, and encouraging innovation and resilience.

It's important to remember that success is not a destination but a journey that requires dedication, hard work, and perseverance. This investment can improve project outcomes, increase employee satisfaction, and reduce employee turnover.

Team Communication

Moreover, it is essential to communicate effectively with your team and other stakeholders involved in the project.?

As the famous management expert Stephen Covey said, "Seek first to understand, then to be understood." Effective communication ensures everyone is on the same page and the project progresses as planned.

It is also essential to foster a culture of collaboration and teamwork within your team. Please encourage your team members to share ideas, opinions, and feedback and work together to solve any challenges they may have during the project.

Conclusion

Project management is a complex discipline that involves the use of diverse tools, methodologies, and processes. However, it is essential to understand that these components are only a means to an end. Ultimately, the success of a project relies on the people involved. Every individual, from team members who carry out the tasks to stakeholders who offer valuable feedback and customers who benefit from the end product, contributes to the project's outcome in a significant way.

Therefore, project managers must prioritize building solid relationships with all stakeholders by promoting open communication and fostering a positive working environment. By doing so, project managers can ensure that every party is aligned and invested in the project's success, leading to better outcomes and higher satisfaction for everyone involved.

A nice piece Gregory, not specific to Rail Projects, this applies to every Project Getting the right People involved from the outset, building and maintaining the collaboration trust and cooperation. I have delivered Projects in organisations where there was no trust, cooperation or collaboration and they were so much more difficult. This all comes down to Leadership, empowering the Team and having really good Governance along with Technical Design oh and did I meantion Ownership? If nobody internally Owns it then it will be very difficult to deliver. Active Sponsorship, not someone who helicopters in once a week or month for a Steering Committee, a Sponsor who can give guidance and make decisions will ensure successful outcomes
