The Hidden Struggles of Teens: Understanding Self-Harm as a Coping Mechanism
In a recent coaching session, I had the opportunity to connect with a teenager facing some tough times, battling anxiety and depression. This young individual is sharp and knows right from wrong, yet when those dark clouds of depression roll in, they resort to self-harm. Surprisingly, it's not about wanting to end their life; it's their way of coping with the overwhelming anxiety and sadness that engulfs them.
As our conversation unfolded and I delved into their past and current mental state, an important realization struck me. This teenager doesn't want to end their life; instead, self-harm has become a learned strategy for dealing with their intense worry and sadness. It's like a survival tactic for them.
What's even more surprising is that this teenager is not alone in their struggle. Many other teens like them might resort to self-harm, not because they desire to end their lives, but because they crave recognition from the people they care about or simply want to feel like they matter. Perhaps, no one has ever told them just how valuable they are.
The critical message here is that these young individuals who turn to self-harm as a way to cope often harbor a sea of unexpressed emotions inside them. Their emotions remain unaddressed, both by their parents and their friends, and other family members. What they truly need is understanding and support.
When we delve into this topic, it becomes evident that fostering open conversations about emotions and feelings is more important than ever. It's crucial to create safe spaces where young people can express their inner turmoil, seek help, and understand that they matter, and they are not alone in their struggles.
It's vital that we, as a society, take steps to engage with the hidden struggles of teens and provide the support and understanding they need to navigate these challenging emotions.

SEL Activity: Circle of Control
Numerous factors in our surroundings can trigger stress and anxiety. As humans, we often strive to manage every aspect of our lives, occasionally placing blame on ourselves for circumstances that escalate our anxiety and disrupt our well-being. To foster a healthier perspective, consider engaging in a simple activity that aids in recognizing the distinction between situations within our control and those beyond our control.
This activity will remind us not to enter a zone that is beyond our control.
