The Heart of Growth: Who We Are Over What We Achieve
In today's fast-paced world, success is often measured by our achievements and productivity. We live in a culture that places a premium on doing. The more we do, the more we are valued. But as Christian professionals, we need to pause and ask ourselves, "Is this what God wants for us?" The resounding answer is no. God is more interested in our becoming than our doing.
Our Identity in Christ
Our identity in Christ is the foundation from which everything else flows. When we focus on becoming more like Christ—cultivating qualities like love, joy, peace, and patience—our actions naturally follow suit. This transformation isn't about adding more tasks to our to-do lists but about aligning our hearts with God's will.
The Importance of Being Over Doing
1. Becoming Like Christ
God's ultimate goal for us is to become more like His Son, Jesus Christ. This involves a deep, internal transformation. Romans 8:29 tells us, "For those God foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son." This process of becoming is not instantaneous; it requires time, commitment, and a willingness to be molded by God.
2. Cultivating Godly Qualities
When we focus on becoming, we cultivate godly qualities like love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control (Galatians 5:22-23). These fruits of the Spirit are the markers of a true Christian life. They are not achieved through our efforts alone but through the work of the Holy Spirit within us.
3. Authentic Actions Flow from Being
When our hearts are aligned with God's will, our actions naturally reflect our inner transformation. James 2:18 says, "Show me your faith without deeds, and I will show you my faith by my deeds." Our actions become authentic expressions of our faith, not mere attempts to earn God's favor or the approval of others.
Practical Steps for Christian Professionals
How can we shift our focus from doing to becoming? Here are some practical steps:
1. Prioritize Your Relationship with God
Spend time in prayer, reading the Bible, and meditating on God's Word. These practices help us to know God more intimately and align our hearts with His.
2. Reflect on Your Motivations
Regularly examine your motivations for your actions. Are you doing things to gain approval, achieve success, or out of a genuine desire to serve God and others?
3. Seek Accountability
Surround yourself with fellow believers who can encourage you in your spiritual growth. Join a small group or find a mentor who can provide guidance and support.
4. Practice the Fruits of the Spirit
Make a conscious effort to cultivate the fruits of the Spirit in your daily life. When faced with challenges, ask yourself how you can respond with love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.
When we focus on becoming more like Christ, our actions naturally follow suit. Let's prioritize our relationship with God, reflect on our motivations, seek accountability, and practice the fruits of the Spirit. By doing so, we will not only fulfill God's purpose for our lives but also become a beacon of His love and grace in the professional world.
